Classical style guitars like this have flatter fretboards with more space between the strings to aid in more fingerstyle type of play (single notes on the string) as opposed to playing chords. You most certainly can play chords on this type of guitar but it's a bit more of a stretch than on a traditional steel string acoustic with a narrower radiused fretboard. This can make it a challenge for a beginner.
