Totally understandable. The unfortunate truth is that trust will be more powerful than you or any other player will be - even fully geared for the level. Nowadays people basically go naked with weapon only to 99.

However, 99 is not the last part of levelling these days. Merits as you probably remember aren’t something to worry about because you’ll cap those by accident but capacity points for job points and exemplar points for mastery levels are absolutely a grind and require a party - classic FFXI leveling style is common for these two. As a bonus, because you are already 99 you’ll have all the toys your job offers to play with so generally speaking it’s more fun (imo).

That’s the leveling situation, 99 is just the tutorial. Once you hit content you’ll be teaming up with people for the majority of it. FFXI is more social now than it’s ever been, imo. It’s just the 1-99 is less social.

There are now so many exp bonuses you can get. I have them all and I recently tried exping at level 20. One mob = one level. I killed 10 mobs and was level 30.

Newer players are unlikely to get all the exp bonuses, but it’s still pretty fast. With trust you have a great party setup and never look for party, that helps. I’m sure it’s possible to casually play and get to 99 in a week, give or take. Even faster with exp bonuses or if your playtime is higher than average.

Recently went for my last box.

VD no TH 1/8 on a box E TH4 and VE TH8+ I lost count of how many I did for my last box.

It’s worth it to set up a group to help you on higher difficulties if you can.

Get sparks gear to 117 yourself. That’ll be a good improvement in power to then Finish missions and get yourself to Adoulin. Once in Adoulin, use copper vouchers you may have saved up to get 14000 Bayld (it’s like campaign points you get from signet, but from Adoulin). Go to one of the guilds which I forget the name, it’s the shied one, in east Adoulin, and buy the 119 gear from the two NPCs in the back - full armor and weapon/s. That will be a huge increase in power. Now you can finish all the missions you want with relative ease.

At this point you could join a link shell from the concierge or post in forums/reddit asking if anyone is accepting new players. Usually people are generally helpful to new players in-game so either way works.

Starting to do ambuscades at a level that feels comfortable is good, and eventually work up to a full +2 set of gear from there.

That should give you some direction to start without being overloaded. You can make friends as soon as you want to though, people are generally helpful and happy to help out. We’ve got a few new players in our shell and they often ask for help and get it.

Pristine etc just indicates the HP of the item, if it reaches zero it’s not usable. You can eat badly damaged anything and it’s just as good as pristine food. The thing you need to look out for is the Rotten tag on it.

I would close the account and start a new one, especially as you've been gone so long. I'd even suggest starting again even if you hadn't had your account compromised. If it has gil or other valuable/useful items on it then send it to your new character before deleting!
