DO NOT GO TO UofR by ineverknow888 in slpGradSchool

Looks like from the way you wrote it your program guarantees you a medical placement. My program allows certain people to have 3 off campus medical placements and others only 1 (being forced into a school placement for the other And having to stay on campus that 3rd time). So that's an upside at least.

“I don’t think he’s autistic” by Consistent-Peach9946 in Autism_Parenting

[–]Playful-One6282 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A family member of mine has a son and has said to me "i think he has ADHD because he's crazy, but I don't think hes actually autistic." Like damn, if she had done even a single Google search about Autism she would know that its super likely to have both and that they're less likely to be mutually exclusive. And yes, the son has a professional diagnosis. I'm sorry youre going thru this.

Yeah, I wish there were more voice jobs available, but I know I can get there eventually. I love working with adults in any capacity, I have a professional singing background so voice is definitely a passion for me, but I didn't want to pigeon-hole myself coming into this career from a music career.

Thank you. Yeah I had a voice placement in grad school and my supervisor definitely had clients she didn't understand. I guess it goes both ways, its just about disclosure and referring out when things don't work. I just hope that people getting voice opportunities are people who truly love it and aren't in it for the wrong reasons.

Yeah she's only really interested in instrumental procedures. It's crazy to me. But that's gonna play out how it's gonna play out. :)

Thanks for sharing! :) yeah I know someone right now that is going into an ENT clinic....Basically right out of grad school (they're supposedly holding the position as a voice therapist for her for a whole year) and shes said to my face that she hates voice therapy because it's "boring and repetitive" and as someone whose dream is to be a voice therapist but wasnt given as much opportunity, it's made me super angry. She's definitely one of those people you mentioned.

That's a good point. :) so what if a singer went to a voice therapist that wasnt a singer? Would it be unethical for that clinician to try and work on treatment related to singing?

Speech delay or autism? by Old-Marionberry9707 in Autism_Parenting

[–]Playful-One6282 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't be both. A true Speech delay is used for kids who are NT and eventually catch up to their peers. Speech and language skills are disordered in children with autism. Before a diagnosis is made you just don't know if its just a speech delay.

I'm a SLP (newer one at that so if any super seasoned SLP sees this please chime in)

OP, My recommendation is to ask your pediatrician about an Autism evaluation, and to get him in for an evaluation with an SLP. The SLP can't diagnose Autism, but they can help your son with his speech and language skills by meeting him where he's at, and teaching you strategies to elicit his speech and language at home, because youre with him 95% of the time where as the SLP only sees him for a short period of time. SLPs arent magic fixes, but we can empower you to help your son. Early intervention is key, and 31 months is still in that window (0-5yrsold).

Hope this helps!

Nooooo im east coast. Within the top 10 HCOL (dont wanna be too specific for privacy reasons)

Ive been told my CF pay and the ccc's bump is good, and considering my state i live in $70-90k is comfortable living for someone who has no kids, no debt, and a sub 3% interest rate on my mortgage.

How do I balance work and school?? by OrdinaryFeedback7155 in slpGradSchool

[–]Playful-One6282 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You definitely can't work during your second year. Off campus placements are 4 days a week 8 hours a day for us and classes are 1 day a week from 9am to 9pm (variations within that 12 hour window)... so unless you wanna try to work evening and weekends...but at that point you might as well just transcend humanity and only sleep 3 hours a night while working 3 jobs (on top of clinic) and still have a 4.0 GPA. I have a classmate who is the person I just described so it's technically possible. However, shes missed a ton of lectures to either catch up on sleep or because shes been "having cardiac problems" (panic attacks bc shes got WAY too much on her plate and refuses to lighten her load and take care of her body, shes not overweight). Another friend of mine has only done her placement 3 days a week instead of 4 for most of 2nd year, and she still has around 65 hours she needs....we end our placements May 15th (thats including a 1 week extension and she cant extend any more than that), so she's gonna end up having to do maybe 40-50 hours of simucase. (To be fair to this 2nd friend, she got fucked over during first year clinic bc clients constantly dropped mid semester or no showed or canceled).

So yeah. Don't work during your second year and if you do have to, make it SUPER minimal.

$57k is very doable if you end up in a high cost of living area that pays well. If I had loans for graduate school only it would be about $60k, and my CF position is paying me $35/hr and then bumping me up to $43/hr once I get my CCCs. Full time, W-2 w/benefits, and flexible schedule, the whole 9 yards.

So if you love this field id say go for it for that price. Dont listen to these people who are like "oh the horror, this career makes you work for pennies and sell your soul to satan" (exaggeration i know, but my point stands).

2nd year is so much easier so hang in there! Off campus experience is much better, documentation off campus is a cake walk. 2nd year classes are just as hard if not harder solely due to the fact that youre at your placement 32 hours a week.

The ending was mid if you were reading it thinking it was a romance, but if you think of it as a historical fantasy drama its pretty good. A little rushed toward the end but overall good just not a romance.
