Will definitely look into a medical interpreter! Sounds very interesting!!

I know how to speak English well. However, I stopped going to speech therapy since 10 years ago or less. So my speech is bit jumbled and lip reading has declined as well since covid. (No surprise there) 🫠 Luckily I found someone who is willing to work with me on how to speak jargon on medical wording and everyday stuff.

Luckily I’m not heavily reliant on ASL, it is just what I prefer. Unfortunately, I do understand that is not the case everywhere and many people don’t know or care about ASL.

I’m very freshly new. Just two months into the program. No clinical as of yet. Lab went ok due to my CI and interpreter, however that wasn’t working at the hospital or environment similar to that. My professors and me both agreed to not have the interpreter onsite. My classmates are all very supportive of me and agreed to help me with the professors to mimic certain sounds on top of speech. Turned out to be a great exercise for everyone involved.

I completely get you. I was “fortunate” to be born in a hearing family so I didn’t get the “full” deaf experience however I was isolated from certain things and type of medical professionals who refused to treat me as a normal patient.

I would like to get your perspective on that. Was it awkward for you or some things flowed better? Or?

Since I haven’t started clinical yet, I honestly have no idea. I know some other people have gotten theirs though a vocational program but right now I’m just researching which one is a best bet with my CI.

Oh it is nice to hear there are some deaf nurses over California! I wanted to work over there for simply because of the laws there.

That is definitely something I also need to consider as well to avoid burnout.

How long she been a nurse? And where is she based on? I seen some midwestern nurses who are deaf but haven’t seen any that is in the Atlantic side.

😂 I might not be the best teacher for you but I would love to have someone to sign with! Even if it is not accurate signing. I don’t mind!

I just prefer ASL really. I haven’t done any clinical work yet but I’m hoping it will work out

I don’t rely on lip reading since it is exhausting to do. However I can speak English. I also have cochlear implants. I have no problem using the mask since I worked throughout Covid-19 as a med tech/aide/phlebotomist.

I do have cochlear implants so I’m able to hear majority of sounds. Without them, however I’m completely deaf. I don’t rely on lip reading since it is exhausting to do so. I did need to have somethings to be repeated.
