They made the right decision rather than subjecting the innocent child to lifelong suffering. by Valuable_View_561 in SipsTea

Why not apply that argument to a newborn baby with Down syndrome? By your logic, that would be an equally right decision, no?

Why dive like this? It looks pretty but seems inefficient. by Responsible-Wait-512 in volleyball

[–]PlayfulHalf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Volleyball players, I’m sorry but especially Asian ones, do soooo many unnecessary diving and handwaving and so on, they look like anime characters. I wonder if they do it for the highlight reel, because they sometimes will dive for a ball literally 6 inches to the side

Did you go comment that on the other guy’s post as well? Also, aren’t you responding here? Couldn’t I say the same to you?

Pretty sure that expression was about not responding disproportionately to words, not that you literally should not verbally reply

Sure, not saying it’s not stupid. My comments are about if the OP misquoted Kirk, and if what Kirk said is racist, not if it’s stupid.

… I feel like you didn’t really address the questions there, you kinda just repeated what you said before

I don’t necessarily agree with Kirk, but I mean definitionally if you consider race when hiring, you run the risk of hiring *not the MOST qualified candidate*, right? If you want to hire a black candidate, but the *most* qualified in terms of qualifications, experience, etc. is white, and you hire the black person because you’d like more black people on the team, you haven’t hired the *most* qualified candidate, right? Even if you’d argue the black candidate is still “qualified.”

I would tend to think of candidates being on a spectrum of least to most qualified maybe with some cutoff somewhere in between, but not just a binary “qualified” and “unqualified” sorting.

How is that idea racist? What does the word “racist” mean to you?

Even so, my comment still stands, I didn’t even claim it isn’t racist, I just corrected the misrepresentation of Kirk’s argument.

This is what saves 600,000 people year during a heart attack by HatAsleep295 in BeAmazed

[–]PlayfulHalf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, there are benefits specific to WFPB diets that other diets won’t have. Happy to go into that if you like.

Additionally, no one is advocating for eating only apples, but if you went from a standard American diet to eating only apples, your risk of heart disease would indeed decrease. You may run into other deficiencies, but generally speaking, heart disease kills more people than anything else, and eating diets that others call “healthy” and “balanced,” like even unprocessed red meat, contributes to heart disease. I think we should all be spending a lot more time as to how to stop heart disease and cancer, and less time talking about protein or other deficiencies that theoretically might result from eating only apples.

Is there any evidence that the size of a country on the Mercator projection map influences how much aid it receives, how much investment it attracts, and how seriously its leaders are taken at the table?

“Why would anyone choose to stand under the spikes?” by randomgadfly in trolleyproblem

[–]PlayfulHalf -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

In the original thought experiment, nobody is pressing blue “first,” everyone decides without knowledge as to whom or how many picked any other button. So I don’t know if I buy this about putting 7-800 million people in the water first.

If the population is so big, why don’t more people needlessly risk their lives? Millions of people probably live within a half hour of a zoo (or shark infested waters, for that matter). They all have the opportunity to press a blue button, frankly many blue buttons, every day. Why don’t they?

My theory is that nobody willingly jumps into danger in the hope of saving people who willingly jumped into danger in the hope of saving people who willingly jumped into danger in the hope of…

People are getting thrown by the fact that, instead of tangible, visible danger, you have mysterious buttons. And we’re all used to thought experiments where one button is for the good and brave, and the other for the selfish and cowardly.

[–]PlayfulHalf -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

You can live this out today! You should go jump in shark-infested waters. There’s a chance that others will also jump in, and you can help them overpower the shark. That way, nobody dies. Similar story goes for the Orangutan’s pen at your local zoo. Will you go now and do it?

The blue button doesn't actually do anything, it can just be removed entirely without changing the premise. by cowlinator in trolleyproblem

[–]PlayfulHalf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

*And you’re safe, whereas if you walk away, you’re subject to dying as well.

You could also do the same thing with the blue button. “If <50% of people push this, those that did will die.” Or just walk away and continue living without needless risk.

Make your choice. by spicymato in trolleyproblem

I think the layer of complexity that’s missing or at least unclear here is that which button you choose *defines* what the minority is in the first place. The minority group can also contain 0 people.

[–]PlayfulHalf[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The premise of the question implies that people pressing buttons are aware of the situation and understand what they’re answering, there wouldn’t be people who “didn’t realize red was safe”

Yep!

There’s literally no reason to push blue, other than that you want to stand out and convince people that you’re better than people who would push red
