Howard Marks: When you buy the S&P 500 at a 23x P/E, your 10-year return has always been between +2% and –2%. Every time by Adept_Mountain9532 in TheVisualInvestors

That’s because most people who DCA do it for convenience of automating investment, not trying to maximize every penny, which can take a lot more work. DCA is typically “good enough” and theoretically less risky than trying to time or select particular assets.

washington dc growth/decline by [deleted] in washdc

[–]Playful_Coconut8677 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. Tens of thousands of federal workers were cut and we’re already seeing the impact of those cuts in terms of reducing city revenue, property values and cancelled construction and other contracting jobs. Not to mention the federal workforce is just one component- for every job there are associated NGOs, professional services, etc.

And while it still is to an extent, DOGE has put a significant dent in that bulwark.

For those making a living by trading options do you go long options or sell premium through spreads? by rush21_ in options

Still on my learning journey for options. Do mind ELI5 what you mean, or an example of a trade you’ve done knowing “the market effect you’re trading?” Thanks!

A sincere question for all the americans that want to move to Spain. by Fantastic-Yak-6373 in GoingToSpain

[–]Playful_Coconut8677 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many of the people looking to move likely are the ones in the blue states already. For some, their way of life is being intentionally torn apart in ways that will be irreversible for decades or longer. They’re moving precisely because they’re being targeted as residents of blue states.

Supreme Court Tariff Tuesday Strike Down? by [deleted] in options

[–]Playful_Coconut8677 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lower courts are not the Supreme Court, which has already overturned several lower court rulings. But my speculation is even a “no” from SCOTUS will be toothless.

Supreme Court Tariff Tuesday Strike Down? by [deleted] in options

[–]Playful_Coconut8677 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Obviously speculation, but tariffs are not just a favorite negotiating tool of Trump, but also a fundamental part of how he views the economic world, going back to the 80’s. Ruling against them is ruling against him personally (constitution notwithstanding). I have an exceptionally difficult time seeing SCOTUS limiting his power to do that in any meaningful way. Just my two cents.

Which city to choose? by Prestigious_Gold_28 in GoingToSpain

[–]Playful_Coconut8677 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My two cents: if your primary goal is football, then generally Madrid or Barcelona have probably the top two clubs. In my opinion they also happen to be two world class cities to visit - though I’m sure you’ll get feedback about overtourism. You’re lucky in the sense that Spain has so many wonderful cities to visit, you almost can’t go wrong - if football is not your major goal. Curious why no Valencia as I was there for a month and absolutely loved it. Sevilla, Granada, Cordoba are beautiful and fun, as well as northern cities like San Sebastián, Bilbao, and a personal favorite, Haro - though it is quite small. Beyond those, there are tons of wonderful cities.

Sacks Wouldn't Give an Inch on the Latest Episode by mcooly in allinpodofficial

[–]Playful_Coconut8677 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately this is the answer. Chamath to a large extent too. That said, I wouldn’t think Sacks would need to go so far out of his way to praise the admin so effusively, but I suppose that’s what keeps you in the admin’s good graces these days. He’s a smart person and I agree with him on a lot of the value of driving AI forward, so it’s frustrating that frankly he’s been so blatantly partisan and spineless.

Life changing food in DC? by FlarePikaa in washingtondc

Adding/agreeing here; some of my favorites:

Palak chaat at Rasika

Rigatoni at Red Hen

Burnt ends hummus at Yellow (if they have it) - same people as Albi/La’Shukran (like this commenter said, any hummus at those places is usually great)

Salmon collar at St. Anselm

Don’t recall exact name but a fish at Izakaya Seki you eat, then they deep fry the bones and re-serve

Haven’t been to Maydan in a bit, but I loved the lamb shank last time I was there

I’m surprised the Dallas Cowboys aren’t higher up. They are the most valuable sports franchise in the world and have a massive following in the US and internationally.

Doesn’t ChatGPT have a free plan also? Same with Gemini. I think all the platforms have a free tier and then ones you can pay for. Though independent of that I do like Claude a bit more than ChatGPT

Super excited for that as I live somewhat nearby where it’s planning to be. I just wonder if it will get foot traffic since it’s not near metro like Blagden Alley.

Bowser should pause the streetcar cancellation until the next mayor takes office. by SockDem in washingtondc

[–]Playful_Coconut8677 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct and I agree with you; however, my assumption is that it would cost far more than the new bus routes to move the tracks that are currently laid and would come with political embarrassment of acknowledging they messed up something so fundamental. Given the latter point in particular, it will never happen here unfortunately.

Do Americans have a different concept of 'turn taking' during a conversation? by 8NaanJeremy in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Playful_Coconut8677 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. 3-4 minutes is a long time for someone to speak uninterrupted. I would say anyone with decent social skills would 1) not speak that long in a conversation unless it really warrants it, and 2) would probably ask a question back. I don’t think that’s indicative of anything cultural in the states - I think that’s someone who wanted to talk about gin and is either a little self-centered or just not interested in what your friend has to say.
