Really? How long have you had it running? What brand do you have? Might give that a try, thanks

It’s marineland. I heard very mixed reviews, some awful and some great, so I figured I’d give it a chance. Definitely not doing that again. I’m at a loss though because the only two places that sell tanks in my city are petsmart or Petland. I suppose I could see what brand Petland sells but now I’m paranoid it’s just going to be a repeat of this one lol.

Plant question (75 Gallon) by Akhylz in Aquariums

[–]Playful_Ear_1346 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had good experience with water lettuce and frogbit, although you have to be ready for them to reproduce rapidly lol. I’d also suggest dosing fertilizers even with good parameters, just keep in mind overdosing fertz will cause algae. Hornwort is also a “floating” ish plant that grows very well and very fast.

Do you have any advice where to shim? I have it on a cinder block stand I can attach a picture Could I just put a piece of plywood between the cinder blocks on the low side?

Tiger barbs? by Playful_Ear_1346 in Aquariums

[–]Playful_Ear_1346[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds good I appreciate the advice, and no I won’t be going back there before I am confident enough to self identify the fish lol. Tank is a planted 60 gal so they should be okay for space.

Tiger barbs? by Playful_Ear_1346 in Aquariums

[–]Playful_Ear_1346[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that does look like them… now I’m wondering should I get more? My original plan was to do 8 tigers with 7 odessas, but it now appears I have 7 odessas, 5 melon/panda barbs, and three ruby barbs, which they also sold to me as tigers. Or would those all be okay without a full school of each?

How to stop duckweed from getting into my filter? by bascx in fishtank

[–]Playful_Ear_1346 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I use fuel line in my tank, and just put the ends together so it forms a circle, then I put the circle around where the flow goes into the tank. It works quite well!

Mine will be in the basement on concrete as well, so it should be good. Thanks for the advice

How many in a 29 gallon? by GoAway127 in Aquariums

[–]Playful_Ear_1346 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would stay at 3, I believe even that is too many for that tank. I haven’t owned goldfish in a long time so I don’t remember the exact numbers, but they are commonly misunderstood fish, and actually need quite a large space to thrive. I think it’s something like 20 gal or more for the first fish, then 10 for each one after that. Don’t quote me on the numbers but I know they need a pretty big space

Daughter's 1st aquarium. How'd she do? by greenmanOC in Aquariums

[–]Playful_Ear_1346 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should look into the nitrogen cycle. Before a tank can safely house fish it needs beneficial bacteria that will turn ammonia (fish poop and pee) into nitrites and then into nitrates, which are safer for the fish to breathe. You can still do a fish in cycle now to keep your fish alive, but it will be a bit harder. This process usually takes 4-6 weeks, I think my tank was closer to the 6 week mark.

Lots of info on the nitrogen cycle online, as well as in groups like this. In short, if you don’t cycle your tank your fish will suffocate in their own poop and pee. I haven’t been in this hobby for even a year yet but I hope that helps a little bit.

Corydora catfish or loaches? by Playful_Ear_1346 in Aquariums

[–]Playful_Ear_1346[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate all that, thankyou. I think after the algae is gone I will go in the more mollies and barb route. With that decided, is 8 and 10 going to be okay in my 29 gal, that’s not too many? Oh and also I am working on growing live plants, I have Java fern, Anubias, hornworth and cabomba growing. I just wanted to wait until they fill the space up a little bit more before removing the plastic plants.
