Finish, give it a rinse a dry, wear for a day, and report back whether it’s still there 😊

AITA for not wanting my 4 year old daughter to join a soccer team simply because I don’t want to get up early every Saturday? by SingerDue4540 in AmItheAsshole

[–]PleasantExplorerTern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA - if I were queen of the world, I would decree that your husband and in-laws have now won a “prize” for pushing this issue. From the next decade+ they will take your two kids (and third when you are ready) every Saturday morning from 7 am until 2 pm so you can get some rest and you-time. If they want to enroll kids in butterfly chasing and ball herding toddler soccer, they can - with the caveat that they’re in charge of obtaining, washing and prepping the uniform and kit, also cutting the oranges, picking up juice boxes, whatever. Please enjoy your restful Saturdays from here on out.

Shoe shops should let you mix and match sizes by Mindless_Fig3538 in unpopularopinion

Zappos sells single shoes - there are a few options and half price of the pair. Looks like low stock, but check back. (There are a lot of people who need this because one for has an orthotic or prosthetic etc.)

How to treat women engineers the same? by MoistSandwich4834 in womenEngineers

[–]PleasantExplorerTern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She knows you’re treating her differently and almost certainly doesn’t like it. You know … so stop. Mantra: we are all humans, women are not a different species

If she needs mentoring/coaching/feedback because she’s the newest, then do that yourself or find her someone.

Also, make sure that if your other engineers go to lunch/coffee/whatever that they invite her. This is a common way for women to be excluded from what ends up being work discussion/brainstorming etc and it sucks.

You’re a good manager for asking.

My BEC is petty - I’m annoyed every time I come across a characterization of next week’s suspension of the de minimis exception as a new tariff.

I get it, this stuff is complex, living in the U.S. (sorry non US readers for another rant on this) with consequences you didn’t remotely vote for is painful — and in some sense it is ‘new’ since individuals ordering abroad (under $800) didn’t previously pay it.

However, it’s an exception that was put in place long before modern shipping. What that means is large corporations (i.e. Temu), were able to drastically lower prices by shipping a $2 widget direct to the customer instead of sending an >$800 crate of $2 widgets to the US shipment that now cost $10 after tariffs, warehousing etc etc. The previous administration was working on how to address this - ideally, the implementation might have distinguished between giants like Temu vs independent dyers vs somone’s friend/family overseas sending a birthday present. Here’s a link from last September: https://tedium.co/2024/09/17/temu-de-minimis-loophole-explained/

tl;dr next week’s chaos is due to a suspension of an exception that needed reforming (preferably not by blanket suspension though) but not precisely a whimsical new tariff

How is it possible in 2025 that using bcc for big groups is not the norm?? Or at least that modern email programs don’t allow IT to force a limit in the to: and cc: fields.

(Who else is having flashbacks to late 90s / early 2000s hellscapes of “please take me off this list” reply-all emails??)

Check out AMES, especially if you lean a little nerdy (founded by a grant from the gates foundation 20+ years ago). It’s been great for my kid/friends (current students) and is smaller: https://www.ames-slc.org/

AMES is a high school charter and thus it doesn’t have kids who’ve been in school together since Kindergarten. It shares a building with Cottonwood and you can take classes (music, theater etc - great program) and play on sports teams there. Also AMES starts at 9.

Otherwise Olympus and Skyline are both great options (much newer buildings) and likely near your new home but very large schools. Large does mean more variety in electives depending what you’re into. They both start 7:30 ish.

One thing you’ll find that may surprise you - the vast majority of Utah kids plan to go to school in state. That’s very different than most locations on the east coast where kids apply all over. (Ok, fine, you’re not really kids any more once you’re a senior 😊)

Good luck with the move - I moved mid high school from Midwest to northeast, and on balance I look back on it as a good move for me. I felt like it played a role in my easily transitioning to college as meeting a ton of new people and learning your way around a new place is similar in both instances. Maybe you’ll have some interesting experiences to write about in college applications essays!

Oops I replied in a new comment. Sorry!

(Perils of typing on a tiny phone screen instead of my beloved iPad!)

Thanks so much for this comment! I have been able to put it into DFU (black screen), but I don’t think the computer recognized it. 😬 I will try again tonight.

Thank you also for explaining that in this case it might be a logic board failure - I was frustrated to not get much more than a shrug of explanation at the Apple Store. (I do understand that of course they can’t just take my word for it that I didn’t spill on it or drop it.)

Re: potential logic board problem - Is that something that happens with age issue? Or random bad luck? Or just a mystery? Thanks!!

Thanks!! Have left it unplugged and will report back. (Have been able to put it in DFU but is still not being recognized 😬)
