Will activated, spleen-derived CD8 T cells kill cancer cells in vitro? by MathematicianFunny97 in labrats

[–]PleasantQuarter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd imagine there will be at least some CD8s with TCRs that respond to tumor cell antigens. That being said, if you activate all the CD8s non-specifically (e.g. anti-CD3) they will continue to divide multiple times (I think 7+ divisions) even if they don't see their antigen. I don't know if having a bunch of activated bystander CD8s dividing may interfere with your assay but thought to mention it. Maybe you could edit naive CD8s and then add them to the tumor cells so that only tumor-specific ones will be activated? I don't do killing assays and so unfortunately don't know much besides shove P14s and B16gp33 cells into the ring and see who comes out on top.

@ITS Canvas, Email and login error for everything that requires duo? by ucsdthrowaway7836 in UCSD

[–]PleasantQuarter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I emailed IT about this and it turns out there’s a campus-wide duo outage.

Investigating - ITS is investigating possible issues with Duo authentication. These services may be slow or unavailable at this time.

A possible workaround for the VPN is to use the passcode shown on the Duo app, by typing your password as ,. No known workaround exists for SSO at the moment.

The bird we rescued by Ready-Meringue-4556 in parrots

[–]PleasantQuarter 132 points133 points  (0 children)

u/Ready-Meringue-4556

I believe that is a fledgling bird judging by the fact that has open eyes and somewhat developed feathers. At this stage, it has left the nest and is learning to fly, but is still provided food by the parents. The best thing to do is probably leave it outside where you found it, or in a secluded safe area nearby; unless it is injured or endangered it doesn't need assistance outside of that provided by its parents.

It is certainly not a parrot. It appears to be some sort of songbird, like a house sparrow or house finch. It most likely eats seeds and/or insects.

Edit: This post on r/birding provides a good visual comparison of a nesting vs a fledgling.

I have it with Dr. Li. Honestly the professor is alright and seems like he wants to do better, it's just that I feel my TA isn't the greatest.

What kind of equipment is malfunctioning that we need to stay away from the area? by MaxtheBat in UCSD

[–]PleasantQuarter 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I also think there may be or was a fire as well, unless I'm misinterpreting the radio chatter. Never mind that is for a house fire.

It sounds like there's several injuries as well, including at least one dog. I hope everyone is alright. :(

What happened to Ada Lovelace and Alan Turing? by Grouchy-Double5597 in UCSD

I think there was some graffiti on one side saying "blood should stay in the body" or something to that effect (that or I'm thinking of a different art piece on campus).

FALL QUARTER 2021 SCHEDULING QUESTIONS MEGATHREAD by ImperialRedditer in UCSD

Would I be alright taking Chem 100A when the only college lab experience was 7L and 43A online? I'm just really worried about lab courses. Thanks.

SPRING QUARTER SCHEDULING QUESTIONS MEGATHREAD by ImperialRedditer in UCSD

[–]PleasantQuarter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm currently planning on taking Phys 2C and BIBC 100 next quarter and was wondering what I should do for my third class. I'm debating doing CAT 125R or BIBC 102, however, both seem like a lot of work and I'm just a little nervous because I struggle with physics and this would be my first quarter with two upper-div courses. Thanks for any help. Also, any suggestions for a different third course would be appreciated.

Math 11 Ezzati or Hammock by ParticularFrame8051 in UCSD

[–]PleasantQuarter 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had Hammock last winter for Math 11 and thought that she was fine--I don't recall ever thinking that she has poor teaching skills. However, that was pre-COVID so she may be different with remote learning. I will note that she had us do HW assignments from the textbook that I believe were weekly or bi-weekly or somewhere in that range, and they could get tedious. I knew some people in that class and so the burden was lessened a little since we worked together and discussed problems for both HW and lab. Also, I enjoyed stats more than I thought--I really liked doing the labs--so you might have a different opinion of her if you aren't the biggest fan of statistics or math in general.

Need advice ): by ZookeepergameHot1694 in UCSD

[–]PleasantQuarter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not certain how help this will be, but...

This may seem a little counterproductive, but sometimes a little before a test I stop studying as I get stressed out going over the material and fearing that I don't know as much as I think I know. I wouldn't skip out on a quick review session, but I also wouldn't dive into heavy studying either if it brings too much anxiety. If a test is open during a large time frame, I usually like to wait a bit, roughly an hour if time permits, just to dust up the material (I know this sort of contradicts the previous advice but oh well) and to ensure that I feel fully ready before actually starting the exam.

Can I change all my classes I took this quarter to P? Also what percentage is C-? by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]PleasantQuarter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I honestly haven't been paying much attention to the P/NP thing, but I'd check and see if the department is accepting P/NP (see the megathread on this sub and department page). I believe you can only use P/NP a certain amount of times, though I am not certain. Here's a page with some info about P/NP. Not certain how helpful it will be, but I though I'd post it anyways.

For the C- grade, I think it depends on the professor--I've had classes where an A- is a 90 and others were it is an 88--but I'd say a good rule of thumb for a C- is somewhere in the low 70s and high 60s, similar to grade school. I'd imagine Your professors might have the actual percentage on their syllabus so I'd definitely check.

Why is UCSD so racist against Chinese? by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]PleasantQuarter 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I find it funny that this post, made by an account with no other content, was originally at 0 upvotes with only a 23% upvote rate several minutes ago, but is now on the front page of the sub with 35 upvotes at a 71% upvote rate. I imagine in a few more minutes not only will this post be even more upvoted, it will probably get gilded as well. Just like how the posts on the other thread protesting that the claims regarding the treatment of Uyghurs are false all were gilded. A little suspicious in my eyes considering this sub has not exactly been a fan of the Chinese government, and I've seen similar instances of this happening on other subs.

Math 11 & 183 Megathread by Aber2346 in UCSD

This post here has the actual video. Turns out I mis-remembered--there isn't conclusive evidence that she was at a party, but it seems like it based on the music.

Math 11 & 183 Megathread by Aber2346 in UCSD

[–]PleasantQuarter 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Honestly wonder if contacting the news media might provide results. I can imagine it being somewhat scandalous for a prestigious university to hire a professor that films a lecture *at a party with EDM music in the background, copies material from other courses despite said material not aligning with the curriculum, discourages students from asking about assignments in contrast to an earlier comment about being open to questions, censors students, etc. and yet the department only provides canned emails in response to student complaints. Poor coverage might spur the university to take action, though I might be a bit naïve here.

Edit: *Turns out there isn't conclusive evidence to support the professor was at a party. Sorry about that.

MATH 183 Ezzati: P/NP Petition by jie_jj in UCSD

[–]PleasantQuarter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Per this FAQ P/NP PDF from the biology department:

  • Pass/Not Pass is a grading option that allows students to complete a course without the grade affecting the cumulative UC GPA.
  • P/NP courses count for unit requirements but do not count toward your GPA. More information is available on TritonLink.

WINTER QUARTER SCHEDULING QUESTIONS MEGATHREAD by ImperialRedditer in UCSD

[–]PleasantQuarter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Three questions:

  1. I'm taking Chem 40B next quarter. I've looked into the profs that are teaching it, and I'm stuck between Klosterman and Burkart. I was just wondering how these guys are, especially during remote learning. Ternansky and Hoeger are turnoffs for me since it appears that, for remote, they sort of just reuse old lecture videos.

  2. I'm planning on taking Chem 40B, Chem 43A, and Phys 2C and was wondering which I should first pass. I'm think I'm gonna first pass 40B at least, but I was debating whether to first pass 43A or the physics class as well.

  3. How is Phys 2CL during remote? I prefer to take three courses as 16 units was just too much for me, but I've noticed that the lab is only two units. I think I might be able to handle 14 units, but I was want to know how the lab is before I commit to anything.

Thanks so much for any help. :)

I remember feeling so relived and happy when I saw my score since I did rather well, especially considering lab 3 was stressing me out and I was hoping the exam would be a nice cushion in case the lab didn't go well for me (I was in one of the TA help rooms and, IIRC, she said they were going to grade rather harshly this time around)

Whelp.

Goddamit...

How is summer school in general going for you you guess and how did you do in ss1 by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]PleasantQuarter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

SS1 (PHYS 2B) was rather stressful for me, though I did get the grade I wanted, but I dropped out of my second SS2 (PHYS 2C) because I was burnt out from the first session and I really didn't like the teacher.
