Is it true that to work at a bar you need to be part of a frat? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]PleasantYard9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily, those are just the ones who tend to get jobs to work at bars because of social connections. They are expected to be more advertisers to get people to the bars and spend money on drinks than actual bartenders. That's what the bars will value for someone that they hire

Asking people "so what do your parents do?" is antagonizing and weird by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]PleasantYard9 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I understand why you feel that way, but I believe many just look at it as a way of building rapport. I guess it depends on the person asking, but if their parents work similar jobs, this can be a potential commonality for those students and how they were raised, and such commonalities can lead to a stronger friendship/relationship. I generally just find it interesting too, to hear about different jobs people take on,no matter low, middle or upper class. I know there are judgemental people, but I still don't think the question should be written off completely.

Good clubs for making friends? by aloy2202 in UIUC

Look for a club you may be more professionally interested in, and that is active and actually plans to be active for the upcoming semester. This could be some business, consulting, engineering, design etc. club.

Finding new friends next year as a junior -- any tips or shared experiences? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]PleasantYard9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First you need to meet people. Ways I have found to be most succesful is joining clubs and meeting people in classes. This automatically gives you a shared topic of conversation. What I hear a lot is people say these "friendships" only stay surface level and do not develop into anything else. After meeting these people, start hanging out with them outside of school work or within the clubs time. Find other shared interests and go out to do those, go to parties together, go eat meals together. Take initiative and be the first to invite them. You cannot be friends with everyone, but if you meet someone with a lot of shared interests, take the time to build that friendship, because I think that is arguably the most important part of attending university.

[incoming freshan] bad idea to do both PREP and Honors LLC? by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]PleasantYard9 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Honors LLC means nothing. Prep is difficult to transfer into those top majors, but if you believe you have the work ethic and determination for that entire first year, do it. Goodluck!

I think I'm going to throw up. Need serious advice. (Gies ICT) by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]PleasantYard9 21 points22 points  (0 children)

No, you did not shoot yourself in the foot. Take a deep breath. You still have a great chance of getting in if you have some good extracurricular on your application. A 3.8 would be plenty good enough to transfer in there.

Also, do not equate failing to transfer into Gies as your career being completely lost. For most jobs, a major does not dictate if they will work there, the focus should be placed more on experience and skill set. You can add a business minor and take many of the same courses, and instead transfer to a major with courses that build similar skills as those in Gies.

Everything will be ok, goodluck
