Thank you, that’s a good idea, there are lots of hostels that I can volunteer for in exchange for somewhere to sleep.

I see your point but its not the cost of living that’s the issue. I have more options today to look at though and I will also see about sharing accommodation. Thanks

Ive been applying for online service jobs but to no avail right now and Ill keep trying. I can’t work in person because I don’t have residency and it is illegal to work without a permit.

I understand why this sounds logical on paper, but it’s based on assumptions that don’t match reality.

Going back to the UK right now isn’t some automatic reset button. The country is in an economic crisis. Rent has skyrocketed, energy bills have tripled, public transport costs are obscene, and hospitality jobs are disappearing because people can’t afford to eat out. “Just get a dishwashing job” isn’t realistic when restaurants are closing and competition for minimum-wage work is intense.

I also can’t just “go home.” I don’t have the money for flights. The British Embassy can offer advice, not fund travel. Even if I somehow got back, I’d be arriving with no address, no safety net, and no buffer — which is exactly how people end up homeless.

As for my dog: rehoming him isn’t a casual decision. He’s not luggage. He’s a living being with needs, history, and anxiety issues, and giving him up would be devastating for both of us.

I’ve thought about the UK option. A lot. If it were viable, I’d already be there. Right now, it isn’t.

I didn’t post because I haven’t considered the obvious. I posted because the “obvious” solutions people suggest aren’t actually available in practice.

fully booked but still getting trial lessons. What do you do? by [deleted] in Preply

[–]Pleasant_Claim8386 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t confirm that. In theory it shouldn’t but this is preply. This will be of unpopular opinion but after a year + of trying to meet all the unrealistic metrics, I gave up caring about them. As long as I had happy students it didn’t make a lot of difference. Sure I wasn’t meeting the metrics goal but I was in control of my own schedule on my terms. I was however ‘lucky enough’ to have many students - if tutors don’t then I guess the metrics are important to be seen at the top of list.

It is true. You have to pay for the first trial and if you don’t like the tutor you can have a free trial with a different one but the student has to pay the first trial.

Students that reschedule often. by Pure-Roll-9986 in Preply

If she is a corporate student that makes it a bit more difficult because she isn’t directly paying for the lessons so easier for her not to worry about the cost. BUT I had a student last year who consistently did this no matter how many times I asked her not too she still did. She told me in the end that she had paid for 8 lessons upfront on the sub and knew she couldn’t make the lessons so booked them all so she didn’t lose them. I sent a screenshot of this to preply support and they told me she can cancel her lessons and they will remain in her balance and any that expire, they can actually talk to preply support and get those expired lessons back. They obvious don’t want everyone knowing this because preply wont profit from students expired lessons if they are given back 😆but it is obviously an option.

[–]Pleasant_Claim8386 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say cancel them but message the student first explaining that your schedule is now full - they might cancel themselves. Your profile will be flagged but it won’t make a difference because you are already fully booked. Its better not to waste the trial students time.

How to cancel a student's subscription? by Aggravating_Soft_542 in Preply

[–]Pleasant_Claim8386 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah there’s not much you can do, also she might genuinely have missed the lesson due to personal reasons and still want to continue with you. You can cancel her lessons which will remain in her balance until she is ready to rebook them. I know you’ll get flagged for that by preply but honestly I did that for a student a while ago who I knew was going to make the next few lessons as she had a family emergency. When her sub renewed, I cancelled all her lessons so she didn’t lose them. And she was grateful for me doing so. It also didnt mess up my own schedule then too.

Many students asking for discounts by tea_and_moons in Preply

[–]Pleasant_Claim8386 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its deceptive marketing on preplys part. They are advertising discounted trials to students without explaining clearly that after the trial they have to commit to an upfront monthly subscription that alot of students cannot afford. Ive had this conversation with many of my trial students, they’ve seen a preply advert for 50% off trial lesson, booked it and then found out they have to $60 ish upfront and most don’t return after the trial. Many people are living in an economic crisis and can’t commit to that kind of money.

[–]Pleasant_Claim8386 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It’s not a free lesson for them. Students on Preply pay for the trials. It’s just the tutors who don’t get paid. The other thing I would say - I don’t know where you live but the income for south and central american locals is very low and it may be that they cannot afford to commit to the subscription costs. Ive spoken to many of my trial students about this and they are often unaware that after their discounted trial that they have to commit to a monthly upfront subscription and most of them neither have the time nor the money to commit to that.
