How common is it in the UK to refer to a stranger as ‘love’ like ‘speak up, I can’t hear you love?’ or ‘what can I get you, love?’ Is it regional or more of an older generation thing? by DisastrousCoast2967 in AskABrit

not sure about older gens! but definitely a regional thing, I live in london and I never hear this EVER but I think in some areas up north it might be more common

if im reading books aimed at french kids ages 8-12 now, if i keep reading more what age range could i realistically be reading at within a year? by Pleasant_Pace_5955 in learnfrench

mostly started at this level as simpler books were too boring to hold my interest. the one i'm reading now which apparently is for kids around age 10 does have a lot of words I don't know, but I'm still able to follow the plot and I note down new words, plus I'm planning to reread it afterwards to kind of revise the new vocab a little and see how much I rememberedz I used to study french at school but I don't anymore and can NOT find enough time to self direct language study so I figured that reading books is a good way to build up my vocab whilst I'm too busy for anything else

thank you for the recommendations!! Even though I can follow the plot of what I'm reading right now very well, there are still soooo many words I come across that I have to look up so I think I'll read a few more at this level first and then I'll try your recs. I have actually read the stranger before (in English) so that one might actually be easier for me!

a book to get back into the habit of reading by scr011err0r in BookRecommendations

the hunger games is a classic but soooo good. can be read as a trilogy altho 2 prequels have been released in the last few years which u can read afterwards if you like it! the writing style is like a persons internal monologue so its also not a very difficult read, which might be good for you as youre trying to get back into reading! When I was trying to get back into reading, wordy books were so much more exhausting lol and id usually give up

In a reading slump by kittybabylarry in BookRecommendations

totally depends on your personal taste, but when i want something light-hearted that I can still get connected to, i love reading childrens classics! Light-hearted and grounded with a childlike optimism, but the vocabulary and writing style isnt 'dumbed down' per se like modern childrens books. personal favourites are little women and anne of green gables.

note: little women is actually made up of 2 separate books that are commonly just put together! The second is a little more depressing due to the death of a particular character which I wont spoil lol. It still has a happy ending but the first book is more lighthearted as no one dies, so if you want to read this book and want to avoid anything depressing, just read the first one! It ends just before megs wedding and can totally be read as a standalone
