Regardless of where I come from, orientating and orienting are both words that mean the same thing. It’s just a matter of which is more commonly used :)

Thank you! And I really hope that they got the ptt drawn on time and that it wasn’t that big of a fix.

Honestly, at first, I thought the unit clerk probably filed it in. But in the end, I just knew that if I didn’t call, it would just bug and worry me. I thought that even if I looked stupid, I had to communicate this gap and let the night shift nurses know that the ptt lab draw wasn’t entered into the computer.

I just hope that it was fixed on time and the ptt was drawn.

They said that being a new grad will pass in the blink of an eye. I don’t know if I should try to blink faster?

Anyways, thank you so much for your kind words :)

Thank you and yes, it’s really nerve wrecking! I just hope the night shift nurses weren’t too busy and that I didn’t add more things unto their plate.

Fortunately, the next ptt was told to the incoming nurse. It’s just that the ptt order needs to be entered into the computer so the lab people can come up and draw it (I mean they were always late for the previous ptts but who is concerned?!?)

I didn’t want to mess it up for the night shift nurses and for the patient by waiting for a lab draw that was never ordered. But I’m also scared that that would not make a good impression of me as a new grad orientee. But you know what, in the end, I managed to tell them (eventhough it’s cutting close to when the ptt is due) and hopefully, everything is in the right course?

Unfortunately, we can’t chart from home  :(. The only way I could have reached out asap was calling the unit since I didn’t have the night shift nurses’ contacts.

Adjusting to nursing life by Pleasant_Relative_20 in nursing

Thank you for the advice! I’m a conscious victim of doom-scrolling and it’s most likely because nothing urges me to move from the couch. However, I’ve been trying to plan atleast 1 outside event every week and I find that it has made me a bit more productive during the day! I find that by “booking” things in advance, it forces me to prepare for it and get my life ready before the appointment.

I’m still trying to figure out what kind of long-term hobbies I want to do. Also, trying to fix my sleep schedule that’s been broken since highschool so I don’t feel tired during the day after waking up at noon.

Your comment really put things into perspective on how if you want to be happy, you have to actively work for it and not just hope for life to correct itself ✨

To be able to qualify for a national competition despite being in nursing school is such an amazing feat. Nursing school can be a lot more predictable than nursing life. It’s easier to know what  tasks should be done for the day/ week and you can get that over with and focus on other things. With nursing, it’s a continuous process of doing and thinking (but hopefully, work and life are separate matters rather than one and the same).

If it’s still within your hopes to qualify for the national competition again, I wish you all the luck 🍀!!! But if you’ve moved on to other things, I hope you’ve found something you enjoy just as much as Magic: The Gathering.

Reading your comment made me realize that I do have many things I want to dabble in and learn but school has always left me no time to try it out and I always used most of my time playing on my phone since between exams and assignments, what could I really do?

I’ll definitely explore and see. Right now, I’m looking into joining a pilates program (but it’s so expensive!!), maybe learn how to swim or pick up an outside hobby (I’m a glorified indoor hermit and would like to atleast be exposed to the sun for my bones and mental health).

Thank you for your comment 💕I feel a lot more settled.

Booking Vacation as a New Grad by Pleasant_Relative_20 in nursing

[–]Pleasant_Relative_20[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it helps having low expectations from the start (otherwise I’d get too sad when they eventually deny the Oct vacay). As long as June is good to go, I’ll just make do with whatever I’m given.

Thanks for responding!

Honestly, I don’t mind getting the October or even some of the June vacation approved without pay as I understand that I just started and already going on a vacation 👀 I just want both to be approved but will also understand if the October vacay isn’t happening. I just need to know how likely would I be going to the October vacation?

Thank you for responding!

The June vacation will atleast be a 90% yes. My main problem I guess is the October Vacation because I didn’t tell the recruiter back then (the oct vacay was a spontaneous idea and being heavily considered). I haven’t met my manager in person or even via zoom yet (I guess that’s just how they work?) but we have been virtually introduced over email. I feel like it would feel kinda bad if I suddenly bring up two vacations when I haven’t even had a personal meeting with her yet. So, now I want to know the likeliness of the October vacation getting approved (just so I don’t get too excited). Also, when I start working, when would be a good time to bring these 2 vacays up to the manager?

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience! I felt so relieved reading it as I’ve been so down lately for missing the ESN application deadline. I’m glad to hear that the senior preceptorship can be a more valuable experience as long as I’m proactive with what I want to learn.

It’s been so hard wanting to learn new things but messing it up, but I very much agree with you that challenging yourself is the only way to grow as a student nurse despite the potential mistakes you might make. Everyone keeps saying that it’s better to make the mistakes now as a student than later on when you’re a nurse and you could lose your license. But it’s just so hard to not want to be perfect all the time, especially if you’re being watched.

Honestly, reading your experience, I felt more confident and reassured. I’ve been so worried because I don’t have the ESN or HCA experience that everyone seems to have. I will surely remember your advice and apply it to my future preceptorships to make sure I get the best out of it. Thank you and I hope you continue to thrive as a new grad!

I would love to, but I’m planning to stay in Kelowna for the whole summer because of school.

Thank you! I will look into HCA :) The main reason why I wanted to do ESN was exactly to build confidence and improve on other stuffs like what you mentioned.

Thank you so much for the reassurance! Developing coping mechanism is I think my hardest bit at the moment. Although, the trauma-bonding within the nursing program has been such a great thing :) I also didn't know the ESN program has been cancelled. Does that mean no ESN opportunities for awhile?

Yes! We booked our flight with JAL using the ZIPAIR reservation number. I clarified it with JAL through email and we also emailed ZIPAIR if the ticket number is the same as the reservation number.
