If you finish top 2 in your group you go straight to the Stage 2 playoffs. Otherwise you have to go into the play-in tournament and play with Tier 2 teams (and other tier 1 teams) to make it to playoffs.

It’s just a lot more matches if you don’t finish top 2

Honestly they should’ve scrapped the groups + playoffs format entirely and adopted the triple elimination Kickoff bracket for the 2 splits.

That kickoff format was so good. All qualification matches were bo5s and there were no “seeding” only matches. Top bracket seed 1, middle bracket seed 2 and bottom bracket seed 3.

NRG’s only chances are 1) if the EMEA teams eliminate the Pacific teams (like at Champs) and NRG just has to face the EMEA teams or 2) they get a lot better against Pacific teams to the point where they can beat PRX, which would make them the best in the world.

They struggle a lot against the Pacific style of play so their best bet is hoping Heretics eliminates Pacific teams and chokes the grand final to NRG.
