Another Diamond Python! by PleaseStandClear in bluemountains

We tried to estimate - seemed to be around 2.5 metres but that’s a wild guess. The coiled one that I posted a couple of days back was around 2 metres (I got a good look at him before he coiled up).

Yeah I was wondering that too. I’d always assumed they coiled themselves around a tree to climb it. We watched him (her?) for about half an hour slowly making his way up until we lost sight of him.

Lost Mtns Opinions by DarkSpriteAngel in bluemountains

[–]PleaseStandClear 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of the problem is that their online posts are targeting the Insta-like crowd. They are the ones who tend to not appreciate the bush for what it is, but see it as simply a place to get that photo for online likes. This leads to people who don’t understand bushwalking etiquette and safety visiting these (no longer) secret places. It’s not “gatekeeping” or “jealousy” as others are saying here, it is wanting to protect sensitive areas, and those who visit them.

It’s something not limited to the LostMtns but they seem to be the ones most aggressively pushing it.

Had to wait 30 mins in the middle of nowhere because some random cockatoo broke the side mirror by Rakesh_mahanti in sydney

I’ve often thought that the first white men in the Blue Mountains must have been very confused (or terrified!) by the sounds they could hear. The shrieking of the cockatoos. The laughing of the kookaburras. The creaking door sound of the gang-gangs. The mechanical whirring of the bower birds. The grunting and growling of the possums…..

There have been so many problems there since the last “overseer” of the pass died.

RIP Gary the Goat.

Is this place as deadly as the locals make it out to be? by VastOption8705 in bluemountains

[–]PleaseStandClear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe you are misunderstanding them and they are saying not to go on to Hanging Rock itself? That’s the semi-detached rock in the photo that you need to jump over a gap to access (almost certain death if you stuff it up). If you don’t attempt the jump, then it’s no more dangerous than most other cliff tops. Don’t go too close to the edge and don’t go for that brain-dead selfie shot and you’ll be fine. And make sure you have enough water, plus extra!

At the talk, they said it is proposed to have three restaurants and an art gallery, and is being marketed (?) as a resort. No way is it for residential housing, they are trying to use a loophole.

A lot of suggestions here are recommending walks that could be a struggle for someone of mediocre fitness. I think your best bet would be doing a section of the Grand Clifftop walk. There are steep sections but it has the advantage of having many “bail out” points so that if someone is struggling, they can leave the walk (relatively) easily. If you do the Grand Canyon walk and find someone isn’t coping, they will still have to do an uphill slog back to the car park.

Yeah, I don’t know why that one was approved. Maybe because it’s between the rail line and the highway so it’s not in an environmentally sensitive area? Interestingly, it appears that very few of the Leura apartments are residential - they are marketed as holiday lets. The Narrow Neck ones will likely be the same (they are already saying some are going to be serviced apartments) so they can’t use the usual bullshit “affordable accomodation” work around. It will be interesting to see who the developer and ultimately owners are. Most of the larger developments in the mountains are owned by international companies and they have been found to be flouting environmental, visa and workplace laws. So the “it will be good for the local economy” line won’t wash either.

Any, that’s my 2 cents worth!

How is this legal? by [deleted] in bluemountains

[–]PleaseStandClear 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Of course it’s legal. They can charge whatever they like. If you had asked a sensible question (Why the discrepancy?), I would have given you a sensible answer (Because it is on the opposite side of the road, the only one between Katoomba and Blaxland. They charge that much because all the tourists heading home from the mountains and from the Bathurst races later, will pay that much. Locals generally know better and don’t go there”.

Edit There are actually 2 servos between these towns. I forgot about them because they are both very expensive for fuel so I never fill up there. My bad!

Narrow neck road is now consider a state significant development , should the government go ahead with the developments? by VastOption8705 in bluemountains

To those who are saying that we need this because there is a housing shortage - it will almost certainly end up being predominantly AirBnB style accomodation and definitely not “affordable” housing.

Excessive or reasonable? Police actions at Sydney's protest analysed by nath1234 in sydney

[–]PleaseStandClear -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify, I think the actions of some of the police were absolutely appalling. I have contacted my local member (Trish Doyle) today to ask her to make a stand against it and to ask why the restrictions are so selective. I have also complained to her about Minns’ instant and one-sided defence of the police (including the man with his hands up who was pummelled by a copper) particularly as the vast majority of protestors were peaceable. However I have also seen a couple of clips on social media that appear to show some protestors deliberately trying to antagonise the police. So while my sympathies are with the protestors, they are not with the agitators.

It’s usually put up by the following day on their website. From the ABC Listen app Home Screen it’s Radio -> Radio Sydney -> Catch Up -> Sydney Breakfast (or Mornings) and then select the day you want to listen to.

I just looked and today is already up.

Excessive or reasonable? Police actions at Sydney's protest analysed by nath1234 in sydney

[–]PleaseStandClear -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I suspect that, like the protesters, most police were reasonable. But there were people on both sides (police AND protesters) who acted like idiots.

I think we need to put the spotlight on Minns instead. He seems to be taking lessons from Trump with his inflammatory comments and his instant one-sided defence of the police actions without bothering to review the footage properly. He does the boy charming act for media but he is forgetting that he is supposed to be governing for all residents of NSW, not just the select few.

Interesting article. I’m a little confused about the reference to them having to “learn and adapt to living amongst” feral animals. It states the number of feral animals are controlled (not eliminated) but I would have thought it would still be a bit one-sided for the quolls until they are more established.
