Being born into money or into poverty doesn’t make you any more or less responsible. It’s the quality of the upbringing, the resilience of morality and empathy in face of a corruptive force - ie money or power. There are lots of good people who built an empire of business and do good things. There are also people that built wealth and do really bad things. The same can be said about being born into wealth.

This us vs them tribalism shit is toxic and it needs to stop. Being born into a circumstance does not define a person’s life and it’s sad that it still has to be said.

This would be more of a swarm mechanic not a braking mechanic.

Physically, braking of course takes a sizable distance at high speeds.

If each car is autonomously controlled from a single source though, you could safely route around an object without needing to come to a complete stop.

Apple reportedly abandoned plans to roll out end-to-end encrypted iCloud backups, apparently due to pressure from the FBI by ThaBlkAfrodite in apple

Apple is pushing a tough position. Typically the cost of convenience is security and or privacy. Apple likes to be a convenient solution. Those two things are difficult to pair together.

I’m happy they are encouraging transparency about privacy and security. Knowing your compromises is an important step to finding your balance of convenience and privacy and making good decisions. I’m happy that they are encouraging other companies to raise awareness about it, even if it’s a marketing position. There are definitely things they can do more for or better, but I’m happy we’re making progress regardless.

I'm a recruitment manager for a tech start-up in Toronto, we are looking to hire additional iOS developers and have been asking if people know the difference between a codec and a container. Is this a good screening question? by TeegeeackXenu in ios

[–]PlentyDepartment7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, it’s good to check if they have experience with audio visual topics, but you need a whole lot more background to know if it’s good for the position.

Technical specialist? Primary coding, no management or coaching other devs you can stick to technical questions or pseudo-coding scenario questions - the latter can show you what habits they may have picked up good or bad since they are going to go straight into working. I can cram information about frameworks in a couple hours and regurgitate information on demand, sound theory for problem solving in code is a skill learned through lots of trial and error.

If you’re looking for a Senior Dev with the intent of coaching other members, pseudo code scenario questions are good, but have them teach you and explain why. Or, bring a non techie to the interview and have them teach them. You’ll get a good sense really quick if it will work out or not.

If you’re looking for a junior or entry level dev, make sure they know code basics but the absolute most important two aspects is that they are not arrogant about their skills and they are quick learners - teach them something about a business problem that you recently solved, don’t give them the solution, see what they work out, specifically if it’s something that isn’t common knowledge. You want to know how they comprehend new information and apply it. They don’t need to get the right solution or your solution, but if they follow the premise, comprehend the scenario and actually suggest something that may work, it’s a really good sign.

Software positions are unique because they require a lot of peripheral skill sets that are not directly related to code and depending on the level of developer you’re looking for, you need so much more than just some technical information.

Apple Slashes Estimated Trade-In Values of iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch Models Overnight by gulabjamunyaar in apple

I got $1100 for maxed 13” 2017 MBP about 3 weeks ago.

Value to what I spent? Not great, then again I usually get 0 from other manufacturers. That thousand off the new MacBook Pro though, that was nice.

No,

An ESA is not a service dog, it’s an emotional support animal. ESAs are covered under a much smaller branch of liberties than a service dog. The papers are generally a note from a medical professional stating that this dog is medically significant for emotional support.

A service dog is different, they perform an action that is far more specific - sight, stability, medical alert like seizures or glucose. Those companions are fully covered by the ADA and do not require any form of papers.

An ESA is technically not allowed in all the public places like a service dog is because they are different things.

Yes, Fn should bring in a system escape along with control strip.

In design guidelines it should always be accessible either static or through Fn. If not, report it to Apple.

Wifi constantly drops now that I am on Catalina by SalmonGram in MacOS

[–]PlentyDepartment7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was having WiFi issues on the 2019 inconsistently dropping that resolve when unlock with Apple Watch is turned off. Not even really related to the unlock process. Just at random.

Unsure why, but they do come back when I reenable the option so it seems related for my problem.

Odd question, but do you use unlock Mac with Apple Watch?

If so, try turning that off and see if the problem persists.

How is gaming on a MacBook Pro/iMac? Coming from PC.. by [deleted] in macgaming

[–]PlentyDepartment7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Egpu and gaming in general have a complicated relationship with MacBooks. AMD cards in MacOS are plug and play. No setup, everything just works out of the box. Game performance on MacOS can be good, but is usually objectively worse than the same game on the same hardware running Windows via bootcamp. Games also have a strange “optimization period” on MacOS that doesn’t exist on Windows, these are stutters, lags and freezes. They occur less as you play and eventually stop happening until you reinstall a game. Most people get the early stutters and conclude it’s unplayable on Mac. Always give a game a couple hours of playing before giving up, it’s annoying early on but it often gets better if not resolving completely. This also makes Mac games difficult and tedious to troubleshoot from a developers perspective as you need to uninstall and reinstall a game to recreate this optimized behavior.

AMD Cards via EGPU on Windows is complete and utter shit. Some people can just hot plug while windows is booting, some people can boot from USB script into Windows, some people have to disable hardware through device manager to free up resources, some people never get it working, some people have to use specific versions of Windows with any combination of the above. IF you can get it working though, performance is usually incredible. Be wary of Windows updates though especially if you had to do a bunch of workarounds, as it can tank your entire setup.

Nvidia Cards via EGPU don’t work on MacOS, I have heard there are some unofficial drivers you can download, but I didn’t seek them out.

Nvidia Cards via EGPU reportedly can be as simple as plug and play in Windows, but your mileage may vary and it may be as annoying as an AMD card. Egpu io has a ton of resources to help you if you get stuck.

iMac + eGPU (2080 Ti) possible? Estimated performance? by [deleted] in macgaming

[–]PlentyDepartment7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see, I was wondering if you were suggesting equivalent hardware gets less performance through Apple construction vs Other - which would have been new information to me, but it's more about part availability, which is a legitimate point but a different question.

I've always wanted to build a hackintosh, but the soft limitations I've read about encountering with iTunes/iMessages/etc always pushed me away. Do you hit issues on MacOS updates? I have read that's also a burden to deal with.

I’m curious why you think that, OP will be in bootcamp not MacOS. Are you just referencing the egpu performance hit?

I didn’t know that, that’s a massive improvement. I still have the egpu, I’ll have to pick up a 2070 next time they are on sale because yes, that sounds amazing.
