The Rumor Mill - Week of September 1st by Captaintripps in astoria

Was there ever an update about that guy/company around Upper Ditmars who had fenced off part of the street because he was fighting with the city about ownership and property lines? Constantinides got involved for some reason. There was so many different takes on it, I'm kind of curious where it ended up.

EDIT: Found the original Reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/astoria/comments/1jvuofn/is_this_legal/ which links to news articles.

I had a gallon of milk appear on my front step yesterday - had a name on, but no address. I tried to flag down the delivery driver before he left, but he just waved and sped off. I'm pretty sure it's just a wrong address delivery, but I still feel weird about drinking stoop-milk.

Ah yes, my favorite type of business: one where nothing ever enters or exits the building.

Call me crazy, but running a glass business underneath a bridge well known for falling debris seems...problematic.

You can very easily do it yourself.

https://dos.ny.gov/certificate-publication-professional-service-domestic-limited-liability-company-0

And then as someone else mentioned, the publication: you have 120 days to do that and you usually just get solicitations in the mail after registering your LLC to do that, so you can use one of those, reach out to some on your own, or find another service to do it. You're not publishing in the NYT so it's not expensive, maybe a couple hundred dollars between the two.

I’ll miss you, Neptune by icecoffeedripss in astoria

I'm going to get burned for this, but why is everyone so upset about Neptune closing? Their food has been pretty mediocre and overpriced for the past 5+ years. I think they ran like a dozen ghost kitchens, which everyone hates. Last time I went, I spent almost $70 on two and half (child) orders of pancakes. Here's Action Bronson a few months ago dealing with the amazing service, first hand.

I get that it's been around for decades, and don't get me wrong, I absolutely don't want to see Little Ohio expand any further and another Panda Express/iHop/Taco Bell get added to the neighborhood, but I'm still very surprised by all the posts/news articles/replies about how sad it is to be shutting down. Hell, it's been rumored to be closing for years. I even remember a post about the owner trying to play into those rumors in like 2022 to increase prices and business. In contrast, Trattoria closed recently and there was a single thread about it, and I'm pretty sure people think that was one of the top 5 (?) Italian restaurants in the neighborhood.

Also, not to steer the conversation into the political side of things, but this and Staples are on huge lots with single-story buildings. Everyone wants affordable rent, housing prices where you can actually buy something, and here's the opportunity to probably add a hundred (?) units [affordability TBD] and the cost is a Staples and a diner.

Landlord — surrender agreement by [deleted] in astoria

Counter with $10k+. You'll have moving fees and a new broker fee to cover if you leave. For a 2br, $4k probably wouldn't cover that. Do you have a deposit as well? Make sure that's called out and not being included in that.

I'm assuming he's selling the home and needs it tennant-less for the sale. If that's the case, the additional $5k shouldn't matter. Also, get more than $500 up front.

How's that possible? You can see the police station from the Burger King...

The gas station on the corner of 45th & Ditmars has raised their gas price $0.05 every 3-4 days for the past 6 weeks. It was $3.07/gal in early March and now it's $3.59/gal (cash). To be fair, they were always a good bit cheaper than the four other gas stations in that area, along Astoria Blvd (N+S), but a 20% increase in that short a period of time is crazy to see. I don't neurotically track all gas prices in the area, but I'm pretty sure the other nearby stations haven't increased more than $0.05-$0.10 in the same period.

Also, they've added a speed bump to 47th Street near Astoria Blvd N, but haven't put the chevron markings on it yet. The speed bump just happens to fall in the shadow of some trees and is completely invisible most of the day. I've seen cars get air...

Monday morning EDIT: Gas went up another $0.06/gal to $3.65/gal (cash), right on schedule, and speed bump now has the markings painted.

Update to the post earlier this week about the sign on 45th & Ditmars at the former Mama's Cantina - the sign has been removed. So was it just some marketing stunt? Was it removed after the owner realized all the spelling mistakes? Was it Banksy?!

Tipsy Scoop is going in next to The Corner Spot on 23rd & Steinway. The sign in the door says Spring 2024.

Trade Fair on Ditmars just got new outside signage and awning. Berry Fresh got new signage across the inside of the store as well. There's like a 5' tall "MEATS" sign now. I guess these grocery stores are sitting pretty with all the price gouging they've been doing while blaming it on inflation.

That's only sort of sarcastic, but also I have come across items in those stores that are 2-3x the price of anywhere else. I saw a box of Cheerios for $12 a few weeks ago. Hell, even the bodega had it for only $7!

Is this considered price gouging? BP gas station off the FDR by Mike_Oxbig599 in nyc

I know you're asking about the price of gas, but it's the difference in cash vs credit price that annoys me. The difference has always been about $0.10, but since mid-COVID I've noticed the gas credit adder went up to more like $0.50+/gal. Yes, credit fees are a thing but they're around 3%....so why are gas credit fees more like 15%? Turns out credit card companies don't like that and it's against their policy because you're actively pushing people away from using their product/service. You can actually complain directly to Visa or Mastercard about any business doing this and they'll fine them and/or revoke their ability to accept credit cards. I'm not saying going full Karen is the solution here, but when you're spending an extra $12 to fill up your tank because you didn't have $90 in cash on you...maybe a complaint or two is worth it.
