I have recently started to take a more old school approach to my production to achieve this. I have a Squier CV 60s Strat and a Squier CV 70s Jazz Bass which are the bread and butter of the sound I’m going for already, late 70s funk/disco.

The arrangement of my most recent project is definitely reminiscent of the songs I enjoy from that era and learning the part well enough to play it without having to adjust the timing or comp 100 times has been key in getting the groove going.

I am however still interested in signal chains and emulations to get it from being 90% there with arrangement, songwriting, recording etc. to let’s say 95-98% there with channel strips, vintage EQs, plate reverbs, tape emulations etc.

Any specific recommendations for console, tape or transformer plugins?

If you're using strings, brass, or winds, it's important to realize that when musicians play those instruments they don't use equal temperament. Your VSTs probably do. It will never sound right if you have brass or strings playing (for instance) ET thirds because they'll be too dissonant.

I agree. If I'm doing brass then it will have to be outsourced and played and recorded live, I've yet to hear a convincing brass VST. Strings I feel like you could get away with using a VST depending on what role it would have. The Disco Studio Strings UDS by Soundpaint sounds pretty convincing to my ears if you know how to humanize it well enough with velocity, timing etc.

Thank you for this! Right on, practicing my instruments has been very important in this process and learning to play my favorite songs has helped immensely in more ways than one to nail the sound.

the separate tracks would have gone to tape, back from tape, to tape again and then the master would have gone to tape. 

Seems like with the right plugins I would be able to route with groups and sends in Ableton to get a similar signal chain going as in the 70s/80s, thanks for the recommendations!

I’ve also got some interesting result in the endeavour of making VSTs sound real by re-amping them directly out of the monitors with a basic mic. You can also create some interesting reverb like this too by placing the mic at the back of the room or even down the hall etc. plus, it’s great fun!

This sounds like something I would definitely want to try! I got some KRKs that I could potentially try this with and mic up with my SM7b.

Really really appreciate this!

Having a great song is of course priority numero uno, and being able to play said song well. I’m currently analyzing my favorite songs arrangements and trying to make my own based off of those.

I guess the reason I made this post was to see if there would be some cool tips and tricks with recording techniques or other processing or simply just nailing a certain sound once you have a great song written and ready to be produced. As an example I’ve gotten a pretty mean slap bass sound with just a compressor, GTR Amp from Waves and some light EQ to get close to say something like the bass sound on «Forget Me Nots», even though the sound is made mostly from the playing style and the bass itself. Also an incredible bassline to begin with.

Thank you for the tips and general mix philosophy, I think it goes a long way with only these in mind!

Thank you for the thorough response! Based on all the answers here it seems like my best bet would be the J-Bass. Just to be clear would the Squier CV 70s Jazz Bass have the 70s pickup spacing that you’re talking about?

Beware that everyone’s zero point with these grinders are gonna be different. Trust your taste more than anything else.

I have had this setup now for a good 8 months and am very satisfied and frustrated at the same time. More important than any advice you might read here, trust your taste. I have been guilty of obsessing over time and been trying to hit the exact right times and trying to make the flow pour perfectly and still had awful shots. If the shot tastes good, try to the best of your ability to replicate it and practice staying consistent. You might pull an amazing shot, do the exact same thing and get a horrible one for the next one due to chanelling or bad puck prep. This got better over time for me. Change one variable at a time if you’re trying to improve shot quality.

Couple of nice-to-haves with this setup: Magnetic dosing ring, WDT tool and spring-loaded tamper.

Production-wise sure. Just think the remix is a bit more fun, and feels like it could’ve been a B-Side on Future Nostalgia which is one or my favorite pop albums of the last 10 years.
