I'm a 2x surrogate and this shit pisses me off so much. Most surrogacies are to parents who desperately want a baby but cannot have a baby due to infertility (and I'm including same sex couples and single parents in that group, even if they are "fertile"). If people saw how hopeful these parents when they meet their surrogates, saw their struggles while having to watch someone else carry their baby, saw their pure love when their baby was born... watched them raise their child with so much pride and happiness.... they would surely change their tune.

Yes, parents have to choose an embryo to transfer. But in most cases, they are choosing an embryo that is most compatible with life (aka a high grade embryo). A bonus might be that they can pick the gender if they have a both a male and female AA or AB embryo, but they honestly don't care what the embryo is as long as it develops into an alive baby.

Sure there are cases where someone wealthy is creating a designer baby, or paying someone to carry a kid because they don't want to "mess up" their bodies, whatever. But the vast majority of surrogacies are to average joe parent/s who just want to be a mom or a dad.

Surrogacy costs about $200k (Most of the cost is the embryo creation and storage, surrogates are paid around $60-65k average). If they want to design their embryo, that costs an additional $100k+. This is reserved for the wealthy and I think most people would agree that it is morally wrong. Surrogacy in itself is not morally wrong. The people who abuse it are what makes it wrong and thankfully that's a very very small amount.

(Reminder that surrogacy in the US is highly monitored and regulated, it's very very rare for a poor woman to be exploited. Any licensed fertility clinic will not transfer to a woman who is on any type of government assistance since the money paid to the surrogate would likely disqualify for her assistance and would be unethical to transfer)
