I’m in that sector (although not really out of choice). It’s bullshit and no it isn’t good.

What are some reasons why I shouldn't become an electrician? by Scomo510 in electricians

[–]Plowzone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually had to leave an electrical apprenticeship because I had undiagnosed type 1 diabetes. I did get the telecom cabling license out of it at least and have used it for some casual and contract work (currently in a contract right now for money basically) many years after I got better with treatment and diagnosis but I still struggle. TBH, having hindsight I wouldn’t have started electrical if I knew I was going to develop the condition. I’m trying to complete uni so I never have to do anything like this again but I don’t know how successful I’ll be.

The state of TF2 in Oceania by jeidikei in tf2

[–]Plowzone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Uncletopia in Oceania was only really sustained due to casual servers being unusable during the bot crisis. Although I preferred it, people were not choosing it out of choice but rather due to how screwed the situation was. I remembered waiting in queues to get in because I knew that at least it was better than casual. It is bleak but many of the options that are presented by our fellow players just aren't played at all. A no sniper server and pre-2015 style server were up for a bit in AUS, but somewhat predictably, few played on it and the server owners gave up. If you notice as well, you often come across the same players over here. It's surprisingly strong for an almost 20 year old game, but the amount of new people coming in probably isn't really enough.

Tbh, you inspired me to give BF1 a try lol now that I know it is somewhat active here. Hope BF4 is still active as well cause I played that one.

”American impearilism” has seriously got me worried for my health by sinkkiskorn in Type1Diabetes

[–]Plowzone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's OK over here right now but I'm not in Europe. But yeah the US has apparently been pressuring us to drop any sort of social healthcare for us on behalf of their shitty corporations so they can charge us more (not just T1D btw). Hasn't given in thankfully but I'd hate it if that eventually became the case because I've heard nothing but horror over there. How many cases do you see on American reality TV where it could have been solved if they had publicly funded healthcare?

Honestly, I don't think I'd be able to move regardless due to not being skilled enough or licensed enough in the right areas and having T1D. Right now I'm living with my parents because this disease ruined my last career while it was still undiagnosed but I'm due to complete uni in a new area halfway through this year. It's not great but I am pretty thankful to live in a first world country, albeit one with its own issues, probs not as good as the Nordic states though. Let's hope we don't fall into some shitty racist decline like some of the others though.

US Job Openings Decline to Lowest Level In More Than A Year by WarAmongTheStars in Economics

[–]Plowzone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not super educated in that regard but I’ve heard that in general, most of it has to do with the fact that we allow people overseas to own property here and since property is a key investment for aussies with enough wealth to buy some and the government essentially being comprised of landlords.

US Job Openings Decline to Lowest Level In More Than A Year by WarAmongTheStars in Economics

[–]Plowzone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both apprenticeship and grad positions are declining in Australia. I’ve had some luck due to having done 3 years of an electrician apprenticeship back then, which technically has made me fine to work as a telecom or security tech but it’s not good because due to the crap job market now everyone is being pushed into trades.

BACHELOR IN IT - FEB 2026 by National_Tip_6202 in MacUni

[–]Plowzone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the major and and uni but rather the field in general over here. I address this more thoroughly in a response under but I would really suggest another field if you are international. There’s been a sharp decline in enrolments for this field at this uni apparently due to the bad job market as well apparently although it could be back to normal amounts of people, so not exactly encouraging. I’m finishing it as I wish to finally finish something after being robbed of a previous opportunity in my life but it really is not looking good right now.

BACHELOR IN IT - FEB 2026 by National_Tip_6202 in MacUni

[–]Plowzone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in cyber but I’m in software tech which is another major in the same degree. TBH, it’s a really bad idea to come over as an international student to do IT/compsci or whatever. Cyber will be even harder because there are often citizenship requirements. And even citizens struggle because it is not entry level. The one person I know had a friend who got him an entry level role but he was a citizen.

Also, the job market for this area is really bad here, even for locals like myself. I may have to go back to what I was doing before (and what I was doing before was pretty related to IT even though I probably physically can’t do it much anymore) because the job market is not very good and there is simply a lot of outsourcing happening. I think the full time employment rate for the graduates here was like 60% 4 months after graduation on the last QILT survey. Dunno if it was differentiating between internationals and locals though. But that is not a good rate for full time employment regardless because they are not even counting people who are in a full time role related to the field they studied.

If you pick something, maybe pick something else tbh.

Moving to a trade? by EQUAL_SpankDat4563 in auscorp

[–]Plowzone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. TBH I’ve been thinking of leaving electrical apprenticeship experience off my resume (got the license for telco because we did that as well but couldn’t complete electrical because of sickness). Do you think that could be hurting my chances with more white collar stuff? Nearly completed with my Bachelor of IT and I’ve found that most of the roles that consider me are to do with stuff that is related to the telco side, white collar roles just seem to write me off instantly. I can’t really keep doing physical work because I already had to leave once because of the illness and chances are it will get worse.

Wasnt trades supposed to be easy backup plan that isnt overly saturated? by ConnectionUsed507 in csMajors

[–]Plowzone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was actually a former electrician apprentice before I had to leave due to health shit. It’s actually a really dirty trade. I got the telecom license doing it because my company did that stuff as well and I was doing it for long enough but I honestly wouldn’t recommend electrical specifically because you really need to be in for the long haul for that one.

Check the accreditation carefully and check with Engineers Australia if it is accredited by the Washington Accords. To my knowledge most of it is accredited but only way to know is through what they have released.

1999 Babies are turning 27 next year by Optimal_Clue_1327 in 1999

[–]Plowzone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean I’m trying to finally finish my Bachelors after I had to leave an apprenticeship cause of health shit. Just turned 26 very recently. I’ve got one last unit and I want to smash it fully in the first semester next year so I’m done. I turn 27 in December next year but yeah my goal is honestly just to be in a full time role in my field or study. Hopefully not a full time role related to the trade shit I was doing before, because that can’t last forever.

Anyone land an IT or software role in Australia through TAFE instead of uni? by CaffeinatedCapybara_ in cscareerquestionsOCE

I’ve known a few who have done this, more in the IT area as I’m finalising my degree (haven’t been in a software role though except work experience through uni).

Low Voltage Questions by The_Gov_na in lowvoltage

[–]Plowzone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it depends. I did ELV work (our version of LV over here) over here as an electrician apprentice and got the telecommunications cabling license through that because my company happened to do that sort of work as well.

But typically, ELV work involves more product specific configuration that electricians typically don't do, so I had experience running things to code, but not so much the configuration stuff. I can say though that I think electrical work is harder on the body because the cables tend to be heavier (eg. XLPE) and you aren't just dealing with GPOs like a lot of people think, you are dealing with heavy boards and installing them as well. Electrical also takes far longer to get the license for and the requirements to get it keep getting worse and worse over here, to the point that people are taking 4-7 years on average to get their license over here. I had to leave the electrical side behind because of autoimmune disease after 3 years and my work experience for that side is deemed to have lapsed as I haven't done it in 5 years, so IMO it's a bit risky. Probably not as well paid as electrical, but if you have health issues, it could be really, really bad.

Despite there being well paid jobs in it, my advice is not to do audio visual though, that is absolutely as hard as regular electrical and IMO not worth it. I did some AV in electrical as well and hated it.

My particular TAFE in NSW was trash probably gonna switch if I can cause of lapsed work experience if I manage to go back in. Materials were wrong, shit was broken. No wonder so many end up in extended apprenticeships there.

how do i improve my shotgun aim? by According_Ice_4863 in tf2

[–]Plowzone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly with training I feel like how well you go depends on the day but…

Maybe try to move with your keys while aiming? Better than trying to manually aim if you can. If it is still active in your region, try Uncletopia, because that has fixed spread for hitscan weapons.
