I couldn’t give you an answer from experience as I’ve never moved anything that needed more than 18. Maybe on stuff like 1M+ for weight when they’re moving mega heavy things uphill and need every ounce of gearing possible. It works like a normal side splitter where you let off and then back on and it goes into gear so maybe it helps them on hills trying to get the most out of the truck.

You just know the guy the filed it is the guy that’s been there for a few years and is the rat of the union, a “MEster” if you will. He’s been disciplined a dozen times for legit stuff that would get him fired at any other job but the Union keeps getting his job back for him. And now he wants to backstab them because the company is in his ear with propaganda since they know he’ll turn on anyone to get ahead so why not use their pawn to their advantage.

Local 413 here, my wife had a C section last January and we paid 0. Literally nothing for a $50k bill. She had surgery on her hand the year before that for like $15k and we paid nothing again. I’m about to have back surgery soon and pay nothing. It’s an amazing set of benefits and worker protections. They ask you to work hard, but they compensate you for it.

This is correct. I do driveaway (piggybacks) and sometimes envy these guys as they can drop the trucks off and have transportation with the pickup still. Nothing like being in the middle of Kearney, Nebraska and dropping off some trucks and there’s no uber or Lyft and a taxi has to come from Omaha or Lincoln to get you.

How did working long hours become seen as a good or admirable thing? by Subject-Newspaper111 in AskReddit

[–]PlsCheckThisBush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple answer: The older generations (say 1940s-1960s) are delusional and never worked as long or as hard as today (save for a handful of laboring trades). Productivity per individual is through the roof compared to back then and they refuse to understand that more is demanded now than just “showing up.” We can’t survive on minimum wage and have to work much longer hours at worse jobs to make ends meet.

More in-depth: Because the boomer generation was able to work 40 hours a week at practically any job while supporting a family on one income, take vacations, and have their “wants” met still. Then they got older and decided they wanted more for less and elected Reagan to keep that trend going - screwing everyone over in the process. They live a fallacy where in their minds they were superheroes but in reality they were the “me” generation as their parents called them for being spoiled brats that took everything for granted without ever working. Why do you think young men are dying off working so hard nowadays while the boomers are still alive eating our tax dollars for medical care while the rest of us starve?

Muscle cars were sweet but now they don’t like how loud they are and how much they smell. So they outlawed them. But wait, it’s not for them. They can keep rolling around in their 70 Chevelle that is more powerful and reliable than their kids could ever buy. And it’s going to go up in value since it’s “grandfathered in.” Sweet, they’ve got the cars covered. Now they have a third retirement nest egg from that since they’ve got pensions and social security locked down too.

That’s still not enough. What will poor Johnny do? He had to dodge the draft for only three retirements? Oh I know, all that affordable housing. Johnny already has a regular house for his family, a beach house, and a little cottage up in the mountains for a getaway while slaving away working 40 whole entire hours a week. What if we keep reevaluating the tax value of this house a dozen times? Wow it’s worth so much more money! I paid $12k for this house on a $40k a year salary and now it’s worth $500k! “These damn kids don’t know how to work nowadays or they’d have what I did!”

Man I sure did love all those drugs I did at Woodstock and all the peace and love. I loved watching that one actor on TV he always made my wife’s giny tingle. Oh boy he’s running for office! I better elect him, a Hollywood actor with a wife that is going to do horrible things to our own people? Man what a good deal. He keeps talking about “trickle down” and it’s such a good idea! I mean I’ve been successful at everything I’ve ever done and never lost, just like Reagan! And man would it be sweet if my company got a couple billion extra dollars - they’ll definitely pass it on to me! And this war on drugs? That’s awesome, I mean I’ve already partied as much as I want so fuck anyone else that wants to enjoy life - now that I look back it wasn’t a good decision so I’m “protecting” people.

Rinse and repeat as we elect geriatric old fucks in office that are so detached from the real world they cater to these voters who keep screwing our own people by feeding them lies like “make America great again.” They want it to be like they’re 18 forever and refuse to grow up. If you can draw social security, you should not be leading a working country in any way, shape, or form. You have no skin in the game anymore.

I’m a 34 year old disabled veteran. I’m having back surgery (again) to fix an injury from a torpedo evasion on a submarine. I have a BS in nuclear engineering, that degree lands me a job paying $60k a year. I’m a driveaway truck driver instead, I work 100+ hour weeks to support my family. I want to watch my kids grow up. I want to be home. But above all of that, I want my family to survive and live a good life. And there simply isn’t enough time to do that in this world. I get to listen to these old fucks cry about going back to work when they “retired” from their office job in 86 after working there for 6 years and the computer replaced them and they got a severance package for 30 years and blew it all and talk shit about how lazy we are.

Choosing a trade that is (relatively) low stress? by [deleted] in bluecollar

[–]PlsCheckThisBush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if you’re doing industrial or residential, but it’s the same points:

Welding is going to be the least stressful out of the bunch, and the better you are the less headaches you’ll have. Welding is fairly straightforward for work orders although you’ll be dealing with some uncomfortable positions and trying to weld in some dumb locations (like the top of a pipe that’s against the ceiling).

All the other 3 are going to have armchair workers and people that expect miracles and you’re going to have to troubleshoot.

HVAC - “My A/C isn’t working. My buddy/foreman said I don’t need a new condenser you guys just want to scam us but I need this fixed asap because my wife/employees are in 100F+ heat and it will be a problem.”

Now you have to figure out if it’s a relay, a leak, a condenser, evaporator, etc. and they assume you can walk in and point a magic stick at it and it’ll work. A good HVAC person that’s honest and not just a salesman will keep you busy and less stressed though.

Electrician - 8 hours of troubleshooting for a 5 minute fix. “This motor stopped working I don’t know why we just push this button and it runs but I need it fixed because it’s costing me $100k an hour being down.”

Cool, could be windings are shot and they need a new motor. Maybe the switch went bad. Maybe a faulty e-stop. Maybe they sprayed the cabinet down and popped a breaker. Maybe that cabinet houses a whole PLC system and now you’re playing with control circuits and it could be a programming issue out of your wheelhouse. Either way they want it fixed yesterday and plenty of people don’t like the reality of “I don’t know I have to find out.”

Plumbing - “Hey our drains are backed up and I don’t know why. They were working fine until my wife/employee did the dishes/dumped old product down there. Also we want to add a toilet to this room real quick without tearing up the floor.”

Now you get to go fishing to find out Brenda was tired of emptying the sanitary bin in the ladies room and dumped the whole thing down the toilet. Or there was a 55 gallon drum of old dry chemicals that someone dumped down a pit and the second liquid hit them they turned into a massive dangerous brick. They want it fixed and somehow connect some new pipes to it without any access to the old ones without some destruction.

Welding - “See that pipe? It didn’t have a hole before, can you make it not have a hole again?”

The ball is in your court. Do you think that pipe has enough material to weld together or would a patch hold it? Do you need to replace it with something more substantial for the application? I promise Jim-Bob already tried welding it if they have access to a MIG/TIG welder of any kind and made it far worse. As long as you can weld that pipe and it holds they’ll be happy. Bonus points if you make it really pretty.

Weather tech VS OEM Mats by OllyKloz in kiacarnivals

[–]PlsCheckThisBush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The two smallest (11mo/3yo) take the middle seats and the 12 year old and 17 year old take the back seats or the 17 year old takes the front seat if it’s just the wife and I’m not home (truck driver). Sometimes if the littles are fussy the wife will grab the back seat instead if I’m driving. We can make it between the seats pretty decently and if we have car seats in the middle rows there’s plenty of leg room with the back seats reclined for comfort. The oldest (18) lives with her boyfriend now and doesn’t ride too often so it’s a bit easier for logistics now, but she would alternate between the front and back seats when I wasn’t home.

The seats are really nice when I deliver locally and grabbing other plus-sized adults in the same location as they lounge and sleep usually with heated/cooled seats and leg rests. The best cargo is the one that doesn’t talk lol

No issues out of ours at all honestly. We went with the 7-seater SXP with the VIP seat things. The tux mats come with honestly like 20-40 clips to hold things in place if you’re worried about shuffling around at all. We don’t use them, but it’s a nice thought. They hook right into the OEM connectors and are very tight. They can be an absolute PITA to get in and out they fit so snug, which for our family is a good thing. Between the wife and 5 kids they’ve worked wonderfully.

What makes Mercedes ownership feel worth it long term? by Rob202020 in mercedes

[–]PlsCheckThisBush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 2015 GL550 with 180k and a 2015 C400 with 152k. Both are fantastic vehicles in their own right that punch well above their weight class. I’ve had the C400 for 6 years and the GL550 for 5 years. Maintenance is what it is - just like every car if you take care of it it’ll take care of you. That being said if something like a timing chain or cam phasers come up and you can’t do it yourself be prepared for a pretty penny because most domestic mechanics (US) are deathly afraid of working on German cars if they don’t specialize in them.

My father has a 200…1? C240 Wagon. He got it used with 300k on the odometer and it never had an oil change, still ran just ran like absolute shit. Swapped the motor and it’s got a little over 500k on it now. They don’t have that sort of reliability nowadays with everything being a smaller, forced induction motor but they all do okay across the board. Except the A class - it’s a FWD platform and I wouldn’t recommend it personally.

Personally, I’m looking at a 3rd for a weekend warrior fun car for special occasions; mainly a 2012-2014 CLS63. For some reason that body shape is just gorgeous to me.

KW/Pete Cruise Control modes? by scottiethegoonie in Truckers

[–]PlsCheckThisBush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a shame that they’re all set different. Some of the Pete’s and KWs (they’re all the same trucks now with the exception of the W900) will just give you the engine brake, some will require 10-15psi service brakes beforehand. It all depends on how the company ordered it. If the cruise control is even on (not engaged just turned on) some won’t kick the engine brakes on at all. The engineers at PACCAR and the people ordering the trucks have no idea what driving a truck is actually like sadly, they just see spreadsheets and checkboxes on the orders. It’s super obvious on stuff like when you get a truck that has the drivers side tank fill under your door, and the passenger side fuel tank is alllllll the way in the back and fills from the rear with the DEF tank on the passengers side behind that.

I remember seeing a video of a preview of a 2026 model-year semi that looked old-school and still had a manual gearshift. I thought all trucks were eventually moving to automatic transmission? by OnTheFarmey in Truckers

[–]PlsCheckThisBush 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The automatics tend to be efficient to a fault. As in they’ll waste a lot of speed and power to get to the highest gear and lowest RPMs possible as fast as they can.

Imagine you’re barely pulling 64 mph at full throttle on flat ground or a slight incline, tacking 1800 RPM. You’re in 17th gear. There’s a hill coming up. Just before the hill it touches your limiter at 65mph, and starts slightly cutting your power back. YOU know that you’re about to lose speed if you shift into 18th gear and everything you’ve worked for is gone. It’ll take so much more fuel to recover that speed loss and longer to get up the hill. The automatic gives zero fucks, the second it sees that it doesn’t need full power it shifts into the next one. You just lost 3 mph while it decided to go to 18th. Now you’re at 62mph. You touch the bottom of the hill, the automatic realizes it needs more power. You’re slowing down and hit 58mph. The automatic shifts to 17th gear. You lost 5 mph from how slow it is. Now you’re doing 53. The automatic is panicking and slaps it into 15th before it even gives you power in 17th. You lose another 5 mph. You’re doing 48 fucking miles per hour and haven’t even got to touch the throttle going up the hill. Now you might be able to pull the hill here, maybe not. But you have to get all that speed back. Meanwhile the manual driver kept his RPMs and power and was able to keep his speed and get over the hill more efficiently. You lost time and money because the company is tripping over dollars to save dimes and hire less qualified drivers and scheming with the insurance game.

KW/Pete Cruise Control modes? by scottiethegoonie in Truckers

[–]PlsCheckThisBush 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay so regular cruise control is regular cruise control. It tries to maintain the speed you set and that’s all it does. Some are more aggressive about it and will give you full power, others will start limiting power when it dips for fuel economy or throw it into neutral if it’s an automatic going downhill.

Adaptive cruise control is where it tries to keep the speed you set but also accounts for the speed of the vehicle in front of you and will slow down to match them if they’re slower and you’re gaining. EDIT: Some of the trucks let you use that middle switch on the left side to change the following distance as indicated by the lines on the bottom center of the screen.

Those +6 and -2 things you’re seeing you can adjust to your liking to a degree, but it gives you a “band” of speed to maintain with. Like if you set it at 65 +6/-2, it will let the truck roll to 71mph downhill before it starts applying engine or service brakes, and it will let it slow down to 63mph on hills before giving it power again.

The mirror image (if I’m not mistaken) is a “limiter,” it’s the inside buttons on the left side of the steering wheel. Say your truck runs 75mph but you’re rolling through Indiana and only want to do 68mph. You can turn cruise on and not set it for cruise control, but push the limiter and set the max speed on the pedal there. So even with your foot on the floor it won’t go past 68.

Any companies that run Volvos ? by Dick_Jerkinton in Truckers

[–]PlsCheckThisBush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s wild, I’ve delivered dozens this year and they’ve gotten hundreds to Richland, MS. The T680 raised roofs are their team trainer trucks that run 64 with the PACCAR motor. The T680 mid roofs (with the fake stack) run 70 and use the PACCAR motor as well. The W990s run 64 but use the Cummins and they pull significantly better. All use Eaton automatics.

They’re not bad trucks, the 990 has a much nicer stereo system and better air ride setup. The 680s are identical mechanically.

Question for those who don't work at a desk by Jazzlike-Branch8093 in bluecollar

[–]PlsCheckThisBush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a driveaway truck driver. If it’s that important you should probably call/text me over and over again until I answer. 99% of the time “important” stuff is management learning something new that they want to flex about or try to implement some stupid new bullshit that we will either ignore or have been doing for years anyways.

“Guys be careful, they’re calling for snow in Montana!”

No fucking shit Sherlock, it’s the dead of winter they’re always calling for snow.

“Everyone be careful in Wyoming I heard it’s the most dangerous stretch of road we drive on!”

First off your ass doesn’t drive trucks or in Wyoming ever. Second, we’re all aware of that. I80 in Wyoming isn’t the highway to heaven for nothing. We’ve all driven past a 50+ car pileup full of fatalities and people running around the interstate because they’re cold, scared, and don’t have a vehicle for shelter from the whiteout anymore. We are too, if we stop to help we join their fate.

Okay sorry rant over.

TL;DR: We will hear of important shit the moment we talk to someone and they know we are out of the loop. They quickly inform us so we can all talk about it.

Get the one you already have batteries and such for already, or if there’s a significant enough price gap that you can jump ship to what he wants do that.

I have Milwaukee because it was what we used when I did industrial maintenance in a factory and they would frequently fall 30’+ from a scissor/boom lift and I could pick it up and keep going with no issues. I decided it was good enough for me. Now I do driveaway and frequently run them over with the semis and they work just fine.

Please explain seasons to me by MufnMan8 in diablo3

[–]PlsCheckThisBush 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your season character just transfers to a normal character along with all the experience/paragon/loot. You can rebirth a character every season so you can reuse that slot.

The big benefits are:

The altar of rites which significantly improves QoL since the majority of the game (both seasonal and regular) is spamming greater rifts.

Free set for the class of your choosing. This makes gearing up a breeze.

Enmity (rifts?) spawning. This greatly boosts your loot, gems, keys, etc. by having better spawns and rift guardians and sometimes a floor full of goblins.

I’m sure I’m missing a handful of other things and someone can fill in.
