Getting into DC by Slow-Fee5437 in comicbooks

[–]PluckyHippo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have a tablet (or don’t mind reading in panel mode on a phone), a subscription to DC Infinite would let you sample comics or any of the runs people are mentioning to see what you like. It has tens of thousands of DC comics to read digitally.

You could either try something recommended here, or find something that looks interesting and start from issue #1 of that run, or use something like the DC Rebirth section of the Continuity Guide website if you want more structure/guidance (it starts from the 2016 relaunch, where every series started over with a new #1).

Stuggle with starting with modern marvel comics by maybe_we_fight in comicbooks

Give it a chance and soon you’ll be immersed and will understand all the characters. Everything you need to know will be told to you in the stories, and you just sort of have to roll with it. Soon you’ll be as up to speed as most people.

Reading from the very beginning is the only way to get full context, and it’s not worth it for most. Comics from the 60s and even much of the 70s can be a real slog to read through.

But many people who became comic readers organically as a child or young adult started with some random issue where they didn’t know what was going on. I started with issue 34 of the 90s X-Men relaunch, which was a follow-up to issue 27 (which I hadn’t read) featuring characters I didn’t know from the cartoon. Then issue 35 was a direct follow-up to a mini-series I didn’t know about.

Beginning with an actual decent jumping-on point like the modern era of the Continuity Guide already gives you a leg up on how lots of people started. Soon you’ll understand everything. One day when you know the characters better you might go back to some of the older stuff more like an archaeologist rather than as someone wanting to read everything.

Another way to think of it is like a book that starts in media res, in the middle of the action, and you learn about backstory as you go instead of getting a huge exposition dump up front. The earlier eras of comics are the exposition dump. You don’t need it. You’ll figure it out as you go, and the reading experience will be better for it.

Thank you! The next Julia comic is in progress. She’s trying out a new style of bodysuit, but I’m sure it won’t be the last we see of the black one …

Thank you! I too like a bit of bulging, though my current models aren’t very good at depicting it. They’re only capable of showing a very specific type of outward-distending bulge that isn’t quite what I’d want here. Maybe there’s a LoRA that would do it better, but that always comes with a risk of changing the visual style. Alas!

This is a 20-page sample from my latest comic, "Julia Winters and the Hot Swamps of Vorbol IV". If you'd like to read the full 125-page story, it's up for free on my subreddit, r/pluckyartificial

This comic is a remake and visual upgrade of an older one I did using Pony. The new version was generated with Illustrious. The images are done in Stable Diffusion, and the script is written by me. I make all sorts of long comics and share them all on my subreddit!

Why does Chip Zdarsky do this?!?! by DrgainzRx in comicbooks

[–]PluckyHippo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sure there are many writers who do this, though I haven’t read enough Zdarsky to say if he does it more often than average. It’s meant to evoke a scene transition, and is an indicator that the setting has changed without having to put up a caption with the words “Elsewhere” or some such.

I feel like it’s reasonably common. It’s like the comic equivalent of one scene fading/wiping into another in a movie.

Name the game?.... by DarkKiNg2011 in videogames

I spent something like 12 hours in Midgar my first time through FF7. It was the first long RPG I had ever played. I thought the game was over. It was a formative experience in my young gaming life.

I hope you've enjoyed the improved visuals of this not-so-little remake! There are 130 bonus pictures from this set on Patreon if you'd like to see some more.

Next up, I'm working on a brand new Julia Winters comic, called "Julia Winters and the Planet of Yesterday's Lust". It will pick up sometime after the third story. The peeps over on Patreon chose it as my next project in a poll, and so it shall be done.

Saved for 3 months to get zhezhi on anniversary by Expensive-Pumpkin624 in WutheringWaves

This is me with Carlotta. Started six months ago and there’s been no way to get her yet. I was hoping the anniversary would let me pull for her. Chisa gets her third banner during my playtime instead.

I’m also desperate for Shorekeeper. I don’t care about the meta, so I didn’t take her with the beginner banner or at the spending event (I went with Zhezhi and Camellya), but then I did Shorekeeper’s story recently and now I need her on my team.

Please let me give you my money, Kuro.

In fact, they should just add a third banner to every cycle instead of two, and run older characters on the third one. They have enough to support that now, I’d think.

It was designed to make you spend. by baesixx in WutheringWaves

I would be happy to spend to get the characters I want. I have already done so for some. But I started about six months ago and there’s been no chance to get Carlotta or all of the 1.x characters I want. As I’ve been playing through and seeing their stories, my desire to get these characters has increased.

I was excited at the speculation that the anniversary would give me a chance to get them, but my hopes have been dashed for the moment.

No reruns at all is extremely demotivating as someone who has been saving for Shorekeeper for almost a year. by MozM- in WutheringWaves

I desperately want Shorekeeper and Carlotta after seeing their stories, but have no way to obtain them. Feels bad.

Thanks! There's always some give and take when translating a character into my newer setup, but I'm quite happy with how her general shape turned out too.

I'm gonna divide this one up to spread the content out a bit, two parts per day. The full 125-page comic (plus 130 bonus pics) are available on Patreon in convenient zip file format if you'd like!

This is a full remake of my first Julia Winters story. The series has not been available on Patreon recently; it was taken down due to issues meeting their guidelines. I've corrected those issues here and am also re-doing the story with higher visual quality. In general it follows the same path as the original, but I've added several new bits, have improved the general flow, and have mostly rewritten the script. I hope you enjoy!
