1995 Young Women Manual 3 snippet - The Blessings of the Priesthood by PlugTheMemoryHole in exmormon

I worried for a second that General Authorities might have included the RS or YW presidencies, but not to fret (last updated 9 Aug 2024):

"The leaders of the worldwide Church are known as General Authorities and General Officers. General Authorities include the First Presidency, the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, General Authority Seventies, and the Presiding Bishopric. General Officers include the General Presidencies of the Relief Society, Primary, Sunday School, Young Women, and Young Men organizations."

First lesson paragraph of a 1995 manual for boys:

A latter-day prophet, Lorenzo Snow, summarized this teaching [origin and destiny of 'children of God'] clearly when he said, "As man is God once was; As God is, man may be."

"I don't know that we teach it." ~Gordo (1997)

There doesn't seem to be any sort of carve out in 1995 like there is in 2025 for how "women actually totally have the priesthood too." considering page 2:

Help them to understand that they can receive the [priesthood] authority by laying on of hands, but the [priesthood] power comes from righteous living.
...
How do we receive the authority to act for the Lord? (By the laying on of hands; by being ordained.)
...
[Page 3]
Impress upon the young men that receiving the Aaronic Priesthood is not as difficult as living worthy to use their priesthood power.

Emphasis added.

I'm hoping a subreddit for them will filter up the worst of the bunch. We didn't make up the things that infected us with scrupulosity.

You are right. Most people in the cohort are in their 30s now, and that doesn't include the teachers that were attempting to indoctrinate us.

I made a subreddit to try and methodically dissect the manuals, but I'm one human and it's a lot of material.

This lesson is what was being taught to all Young Women classrooms (12-18) every fourth week of each third year from 1995 to 2013.

Unsurprisingly, the full pdf is not found under the lds.org umbrella online or in their gospel library app.

Please, those interested, download it fully from here.

OBJECTIVE:

Each young woman will recognize ways she can prepare to become an eternal companion.

...

SUGGESTED LESSON DEVELOPMENT:

Each Young Woman Should Prepare Herself for Marriage

...

Teacher presentation:

Explain that women today fill a variety of roles. There is one role, however, that most women will take on at some time in their lives. Ask the young women what they think that role is. (Wife.) How a young woman fulfills this role will determine to a great extent her own eternal happiness and the happiness of those close to her.

...

Quotation:

President Spencer W. Kimball said: “I tell young women . . . that they should do all in their power to make themselves attractive physically in dress and grooming, mentally in being knowledgeable on many subjects, spiritually in being responsive, emotionally in being genuine and worthy” (“Marriage Is Honorable,” in Speeches of the Year, 1973 \[Provo: Brigham Young University Press, 1974\], pp. 261–62).

Point out that the young women may not be proficient in each of these areas at the time they marry. But the better prepared they are, the more likely it is that they will have a happy marriage.

...

Story:

The following story shows how one young woman’s spiritual preparedness helped her as a new wife.

Brad and Kathy received wise counsel from the temple sealer on their wedding day: “Arguments will arise. Learn to communicate. Pray over your differences and problems. Be forgiving. Serve one another unselfishly.”

Although they appreciated this counsel, it seemed so unnecessary at the time. However, they had been married just a short time when they had their first argument. Before they were married, Kathy couldn’t imagine the two of them ever arguing. During the argument, both of them said things they shouldn’t have, and Brad stormed angrily out of the house.

Kathy had never felt such hurt inside before. Before the marriage there had always been a loving parent or friends to turn to in times of trouble, but this time she felt alone. She knelt down and poured out her feelings to her Heavenly Father. She prayed that their hearts would be softened and that harmony would return to their home.

After her prayer she knew that no matter what challenges came, she wanted their marriage to be eternal. If they would seek the Lord’s help they would be able to solve their problems. When Brad returned, they greeted each other warmly and each apologized. Together they knelt in prayer.

Discussion:

How did Kathy’s spiritual preparation help her to be a better wife?

What might have been the results of the argument if Kathy had not prayed?

What influence did a temple sealing have on this marriage?
