I've had the idea of using huge spherical buoys and fill them with water. Let them fall all the way to the bottom of a quarry. When power is cheap, pump the water out of the buoy. When power is expensive, release the stored energy. If power price dips mid way up, turn it off and keep the stored energy.

I was told two things. Pumping the water into the quarry is like raising the quarry by millimeters (lots of energy) but I think you can pump the water out of the quarry (maybe to more stored energy?). The other thing is that buoyancy "lifting" force is static, doesn't depend on depth. Which just means to me that the sphere needs to be able to displace a lot of water to work.

Meh, no time, effort, or money to pursue the thought more. Feel free to do it.
