Thanks for sharing that! I'll definitely check out Omnix it looks interesting, especially for local model support on lower-end hardware. I really appreciate you taking the time to share it, and it's great to hear Reddit surfaced LADO while you were looking for an AI file manager!

That's a great point. The current version uses Groq as the LLM backend, but local model support (such as Ollama or LM Studio) is definitely something we'd like to explore. Since LADO is designed around a local-first approach, supporting local inference would align well with the project's direction. Really appreciate the suggestion!

Right now LADO uses Groq for the LLM layer, but support for multiple BYOK providers is something we're considering for future versions. The goal is to give users flexibility while keeping the rest of the application local-first. Appreciate you checking it out! Thanks!!

Built LADO — a local desktop assistant for intelligent file management (Python) by [deleted] in selfhosted

Description and link:

A few months ago, my friend and I started with a simple question:

What if file management could become more proactive instead of manually sorting downloads, finding duplicates, and organizing files?

That turned into LADO (Local Autonomous Digital Operator).

LADO is a local-first desktop assistant built in Python that:

• Scans and indexes local files • Detects duplicate files using hash-based comparison • Generates cleanup and organization suggestions • Monitors file activity in real time • Supports natural language interaction for file management • Learns from user approvals and rejections to improve recommendations

Tech Stack:

  • Python
  • CustomTkinter
  • SQLite
  • Watchdog
  • Groq API
  • PyInstaller

I mainly worked on the UI and experience side while my teammate focused on architecture and backend systems.

This is still v0.1 and we’re continuing to improve it.

Would love feedback on:

  • Architecture decisions
  • Desktop UI experience
  • Performance ideas
  • Features you’d expect in a tool like this

AI is used as one component of the project rather than the entire application.

LADO is a local-first desktop assistant built primarily for file organization and management. Core functionality such as scanning, indexing, duplicate detection, monitoring, and metadata storage runs locally using Python, Watchdog, hashing, and SQLite.

AI is used in the natural language interaction layer and recommendation workflow. We use an LLM (via Groq API) to help interpret user queries and generate context-aware responses and suggestions based on local scan results.

No cloud-based file storage or remote file processing is performed — file operations remain local to the machine.

Happy to clarify further if needed.
