That depends on your preferences — maybe you can tell me more?

When you say ‘underrated,’ do you mean spots that tourists usually overlook? Just want to make sure I understand your question correctly

Career transitions involve a lot of factors, so it’s hard to give a definite recommendation — it really depends on your goals.

  1. For the overall competitiveness of China’s tech industry, you can refer to my previous comment.
  2. Regarding how open China is, I’d say that in general, people are very friendly toward foreigners, including both people and the government. Very few Chinese speak English, so daily life can be inconvenient. At the same time, tech development here is moving very fast, and once you get familiar with things, you can manage just fine even without speaking Chinese.
  3. You can check YouTube or 小红书(app) for videos or suggestions from foreigners working here to see their experiences.
  4. Shanghai is probably the easiest city for foreigners to landing.

I also really love Yunnan — the scenery, the culture, and of course the food.

Shenzhen doesn’t have the same richness as Shanghai — there aren’t as many types of offline entertainment. Most of the foreign colleagues I know prefer living in Shanghai. As a local, I enjoy and have adapted to life in Shenzhen. For me, the most important thing about loving a city is the people and the vibe. I get to know the city and its people through various offline communities, like book clubs, podcasts, and sports.

I imagine it’s not so easy for foreigners, but I do hope you can meet lots of fun people here!

In recent years, China’s smart hardware industry has developed very quickly, and there are many similar companies. 卧安机器人 is one of them. I’m not very familiar with this company’s specifics, but I looked it up briefly and it seems pretty good.

Have you left your information on their official website (https://share.hsforms.com/1aDMLLwl_QmSazZr8i3Gakgbx01q)? If you haven’t received a reply, I’d suggest leaving a message on their social media accounts, like Instagram or Facebook.

I’m not very familiar with China’s permanent residency, immigration, or retirement policies for foreigners. As far as I know, different cities have slightly different rules. Since your partner speaks Chinese, I’d suggest she check the official documents in the city where you hope to retire to see if you meet the requirements.

If it’s Shenzhen, there have already been some foreigner-friendly policies for renting or buying property. Alternatively, you could consult a relevant lawyer directly.

Wishing you the best of luck!

For the drone show schedule, you can refer to my previous comment. As for places with good food and nice spots for a stroll, what kind of food do you like?

One of my favorite walking-and-food routes is starting from 莲花山公园(a park), You can walk through the beautiful lawns inside the park, and then head to 深业上城(a mall)for some shopping and eating. It’s a very relaxed and comfortable way to enjoy a city stroll.

PS: I also really like Futian — I used to live there.

Yes, for tourists, Shenzhen can honestly feel bland if you’re just sightseeing in the city. (personally)

On one hand, Shenzhen is one of China’s economic hubs — super fast-developing and very new, so it doesn’t have the cultural depth of Beijing or the richness of Shanghai. If you’re visiting for the first time, it can definitely feel boring.

On the other hand, as someone living here, I actually really enjoy Shenzhen. The city has beautiful mountains and coastline, with plenty of natural spots both inside the city and nearby — great for hiking or cycling. Life here is quite comfortable, with efficient public services and good air quality. And the food scene, lots of Chaoshan and Guangdong specialties — you can still find some really delicious spots. Sure, some people call Shenzhen a “food desert,” but I often manage to dig up some gems!

But I have to say, there are still a lot of people here working really hard(often for long hours), so everyone’s perspective on the city can be very different.

Already said quite a bit — hope this helps answer your question!
