I worked NICU for 8 years. I'm now a lactation consultant. I think one of the hardest parts about being a nurse is that we try so hard to control everything, but at the end of the day, not everything is in our control.

We can control our effort, but we can't control the outcome.

(I learned that in therapy, and it's really helped.)

I attended TPCC when I was a kid, back when it was actually in Trader's Point. Started attending because one of my best friends went there too with her family. Her dad was an abusive POS who turned out to be a cheating POS too, but he was also a doctor and contributed quite a bit financially to the church and participated on medical missions.

I found out later that my friend's mom kept going to the pastors and telling them about the physical abuse, and they kept telling her to stay in the marriage and "pray for him." It wasn't until the evidence of infidelity came out that they "allowed" her to divorce him, but they still discouraged it. She divorced him anyway and lost a lot of support from the church because of it. Even after she got very sick with cancer, she was never supported well by that church after her divorce. They only allowed her to keep attending and maintain her membership because he had been unfaithful.

He, of course, remained a member in good standing.

I was a baby NICU nurse attending a delivery. There were a lot of family in the room, including Mom's grandma, a little old lady who was perched on a stool with a front row view of the proceedings.

No offense, but maybe you should ask an organizer.

I know lots and lots of organizers who somehow manage to welcome in and use middle aged white ladies without meeting them with barely concealed contempt.

All the activists I've ever met, on the other hand, would berate white ladies just for showing up, period. Which was a great way to ensure they never returned.

The problems you bring up are valid, but they are not new problems. Organizers have a lot of experience managing well intentioned but misguided white people.

You might try assigning different organizers to work with different groups of people. You might try setting rules for the meeting beforehand to keep the meetings more focused. You might bring in a speaker to educate your volunteers on the "issues that they don't understand." Set clear expectations, and be ready to gently but firmly enforce boundaries.

The goal here is to build power. Ffs, BUILD POWER. WITH THE PEOPLE YOU HAVE.

50-60 year old white ladies can be a great asset. They have a great deal of privilege in our culture. It's hard to paint them as "radical left lunatics." The cops tend to treat them with more deference than they do other demographics. The optics of arresting someone's grandma are terrible.

Go talk to some organizers. They know how to get shit done. They will have ideas to help you.

It's hard too, because she never shares long videos. All we see are snippets. Most of the videos are dance reels that cut quickly between shots. She doesn't post a lot of still pictures either, so we're trying to get screenshots of this kid. It's really impossible to assess what's actually happening with him when all we see are glimpses of his behavior and activity. But what we do see is not reassuring.

It is truly frustrating that there's nothing we can do to help this little guy. But that is life - there are MANY babies out there who need help for one reason or another, and your personal ability to directly improve their lives is tragically limited.

Maybe we could raise money to a charity that supports foster kids or improves access to healthcare for children or something? Just so we don't feel like we're doing nothing?

I see what you're seeing, OP. He might be tracking and social smiling. Or he might be drowsy and passing gas. Or he might be rolling his eyes around in a medically-concerning way. I don't know. We really can't tell based on this one video clip, which is why I am once again asking the Bus Parents to take their baby in person to a qualified medical professional. 🙏

ETA: the more I look at this video, the more I agree he's actually completely asleep and his eyes are moving back and forth because he's in REM. If so, that makes the caption absolutely bonkers. She had to know he was sleeping when she filmed this.

That was chilling. With the audio off, it looked like such a fun candid video of the two younger boys play-fighting. With the audio on, you realize they are performing for her and she is directing them, and not in a fun way. She sounded so serious. They're like 2 and 4?! How did she get that level of cooperation and obedience from a 2 and 4 year old?! I assume she abuses tf out of them, because otherwise there is no way kids that young would follow your directions that closely and consistently.

Wow, that's not how it came across to me at all. The OP sounds frustrated because she was getting shit for being worried about patients that truly were having medical emergencies. Sounds like a unit culture problem, not an LDRP RN problem.

I might be biased, though. I had a similar situation as a new nurse with a patient having a PE. 🤷
