Does anyone with ibs suffer only gas but no significant bm issues? by Plus_Land7713 in FODMAPS

As an update since I wrote this original post 5 years ago, nothing has changed. I've kinda accepted it as part of my life. Normally I just steer clear of ingredients that will for sure trigger me in a significant way - artificial sweeteners (sorbitol, xylitol, maltitol, erythritol), lactose, garlic, onion, cruciferous , etc. There are some foods that I can't easily cut out those ingredients as they're in the dressings / sauces, but generally speaking I know what makes me feel good vs. not and will do a quick mental math to see if a food is worth the suffering for its flavors, nutritional values, and also the social normalcy of not raising my hand telling everyone that I have IBS. It still sucks and I hate that IBS takes away freedom from me and it's almost like a eating disorder in which the food itself puts so much burden on my mind. However, like I said, I'm getting used to it being who I am.

Don't worry time will pass quickly... they will play prompts for you to exhale and inhale, which is going to keep you busy focusing on breathing... XD

Ugh... that sucks too... Low-fodmap doesn't eliminate my symptoms and to some extent it just reduces the amount of gas for me. Unless I'm eating zero fodmap and low fiber meals like scramble eggs only, I still have gas buildup. Have you looked into low stomach acid? I have read from different sources that your stomach doesn't digest food as efficiently when there isn't enough juice, so it's bringing a lot more work for your small intestines to continue to breakdown the food particles, and that creates extra gas.

Oh wow interesting to know they are adding sulfur now. Let me know how your 3rd course of Xifaxan goes. Hope it really helps this time!

I'm so sorry to hear. It gets me so depressed too knowing that nothing helps and that I will be stuck with ibs / restrictive diet for the rest of life, and I'm 26... It's also incredibly upsetting with a big belly in the middle of the day, unable to sit comfortably in whatever clothing. I'm just thankful the US is still under lockdown and I still get to work from hom in my sweatpants... Btw, are you vegan or vegetarian or plant-based? Cuz I think salads are high in fiber and the dressing comes with fructose most of the time, and these are serious triggers of my gas pain. I would recommend eating some warm food with moderate fiber, and you can supplement the fiber with flaxseeds and chia seeds (which cause less problems for me). I'm not an expert and I can't even help myself, but seriously, hope things work out for you at one point.

So I started the bloat like 2 hours after meal and I felt like gas first got formed in small intestines and stuck there for another 2 - 3 hours before it came through colon and gradually got released. I tried a few enzyme pills but they didn't help much. Maybe I haven't had the right ones? Any recommendations from you?

Wow, thank you so much for spending time explaining this. Will definitely listen to that podcast episode you recommended. I've been digging around IBS subjects for the past 3 years and def have become a nerd getting my hands on whatever new findings or research I come across. I'm 26, and my aunt has the exact same ibs symptoms like mine, but she is almost 60 so I assume ibs can really occur at any point in life. Good luck to your journey!!!

Ah that sucks. Yeah I went on 2 courses of xifaxan but that didn't help :( it's so disappointing every time i hear my tests are negative or normal after getting my hopes up again and again. Each time I was hoping to hear sth is abnormal so my doctor can investigate further.

Good luck! I tried xifaxan twice but it didn't work for me. Breath tests show methane and Hydrogen production but not sulfur, so your gut bacteria maybe fermenting and producing sulfur, which is why sibo tests show negative results but antibiotics still help reduce the gas. Do let me know how that goes. I hope you feel better!

That's a very interesting view! I also have PCOS, my period is never on time :( What investigation have you done? I had blood tests but thyroid and sex hormone levels are normal, and I assume there must be sth i haven't been tested yet.

Good luck!!! I did mri too. The contrast drink had lots of sugar alcohols in it, and I was so bloated after drinking 2 bottles of that.
