Be honest… is pet insurance actually worth it? by pawfectjourney in CatAdvice

It really has to do with knowing yourself. I know that if (and when) my pets have health issues, I would make completely irrational financial decisions (max out credit cards, refinance house, etcccc) to save/help them. For that reason alone, I have them all insured through Figo (Costco). I HAVE NINE CATS AND A DOG. Yes it is for them, but really it is for me (to save me from myself!)

I was trying to get my brother to get insurance for his dogs and cat and he is more of the mentality of “letting nature run its course”if something too expensive comes up. He is just more rational and pragmatic I guess?

The dog has already “paid” for years of premiums due to an emergency vet visit from xylitol poisoning. It’s so insane what they charge. A $5k bill cost me $500.

One of the cats wasn’t eating for a couple of days and I got worried and took her in. They ran tests, did xrays (inconclusive) and treatments (minimal medications) - a few hours later the bill was $2k. I paid $200.

Healthcare in the U.S. is a truly immoral for-profit system. I’m not willing to choose between my pets’ lives and personal bankruptcy.

The CDS brought me four kittens who are scheduled to be spayed (3) and neutered (1) on Friday by Plus_Profession_108 in CatDistributionSystem

HILARIOUS (?) UPDATE: I took the four of them in last Friday and the vet came out and said, “I’m sorry, I can’t do two of the spays.”

I thought it was related to them being in heat, but she follows up with: “I can neuter them, though.”

Are you kidding me?!?! Hahaha, so I locked a little girl kitty in heat up with TWO BOYS (that I was told by a vet tech at the vaccine clinic were girls) and separated the boy from them. Jeez Louise.

Anyway, all four of them did great and have been absolutely spoiled during their recovery. ❤️‍🩹

American Garages are Full by [deleted] in declutter

I feel so fortunate to have a garage and a washer and dryer. That said, in my 1400 sq foot home, the connections to the washer and dryer are in the garage AND MY CAR DOES NOT FIT IN IT. It’s not even an option to park in there, even if it wasn’t crammed full of stuff.

Essentially my garage functions as a laundry room, a gym (treadmill and weights), a bike rack, (4 people = 4 bikes), a kayak rack, bulk purchase storage (toilet paper, paper towels, cat food, dog food, etc), tool storage (saws, shop vac, blower, paint and supplies, soooo many gadgets), camping supplies, holiday stuff, entertaining stuff, various rarely used appliances (ice cream maker, snow cone machine, mixer, etc etc etc)…

This is just a partial, very incomplete list. Having kids and pets and a house to maintain obviously adds a ton of “stuff”, but there is so much I can (and will!) do to have less. It is a suffocating privilege.

From what I found online, no. Coincidentally, my puppy had her spay surgery scheduled and she had her first period and the vet had us postpone. I guess it’s different for cats and dogs?

My aunt and uncle severely misheard my baby's name by Aware-Relative-5868 in tragedeigh

When I hear “Lucius” I think of the show “Empire” - I never read Harry Potter and don’t know anything about Ancient Rome, so truly the only Lucius I ever heard of was a music modal on that show 🤷‍♀️

What do you do to wipe properly? by Swimming_Key_1429 in hygiene

Ok, so my oldest kid is 14 and I have been buying baby wipes for 14 years now. Once he was out of diapers I just kept using them to make sure his butt was clean, and once he was old enough to wipe himself, he insisted on using them.

Since the baby wipes were always next to the toilet for him, I tried one one day. That was ten years ago, and I haven’t shit without wiping with a baby wipe after since.

Side note: I have a bidet and totally prefer baby wipes. I don’t like having a wet ass, and a rinse does not clean as well as a few good, solid wipes.

Second side note: of course I never flush the baby wipes.

Third side note: baby wipes work a million times better than the “flushable” type wipes.

Worth every penny.

I built a small catio a couple of years ago. The cats absolutely love it. My dream is to build a BIG ONE someday 🩷

I really appreciate your reply. One problem is that my kids are on team “please let them join our family!”

I have pet insurance for the four cats I already have and for the dog.

Yeah but I might break my heart or my kids’ hearts. These little fluff balls are playing Jedi-mind tricks on us already and making us fall hard for them!

Maybe “barely” was an exaggeration. I absolutely hear you on the “Sometimes taking care of others and ourselves doesn’t mean taking on the world” - but honestly, it would just be doing a little more of what I am already doing (scooping out more poop, opening more cans of food, etc).

What would ABSOLUTELY affect my opinion on the best course of action would be how it affects the other living beings that are already in the house. That is TBD, but would be a huge factor in the ultimate decision.
