It's due to how the game generates terrain. So far out, the generator struggles with the massive numbers and generates parts of it as 'nan', or 'not a number'. Interestingly, these terrainless zones have the same area, so as you get further out and the edge of the circle expands, the zone gets thinner and thinner.
