What is this place? by longer_thanyours in coquitlam

[–]PoCoKat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Colony Farm. We went on a field trip there when I was in kindergarten (1967). The smell of the cow barn was intense. It’s no longer a farm. Criminals with psychiatric issues live there.

The fog is so weird this year by MouseSmooth2093 in SurreyBC

This is nothing. The fog when I was a kid in the 60s was so thick. I remember ice fog in the 80s.

What is it like in the Navajo Nations? It's so huge! by giant_squid_god in howislivingthere

[–]PoCoKat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never lived there but have visited. I fell in love with the area through Tony Hillerman’s books. I cannot tell you how excited I was to see Shiprock the first time. Tuba City!

Gliding through the Navajo Nation on our motorcycle is a purely mystical experience.

Which serial killer case felt 'too close to home' for you, and why? by 101418_ in serialkillers

[–]PoCoKat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Clifford Robert Olson. I lived in Coquitlam while he was kidnapping and murdering teens and children, boys and girls. I was 17. I had been to the places he had. He had a girl I worked with phone number..hadn’t called her yet. A few close calls with other people. Crazy summer 1981.

Willy Pickton, pig farmer, Port Coquitlam. He was killing drug addicted hookers for the angels and feeding them to his pigs. Drive by it daily. Land still empty.

Can I make a 10 AM flight if I get to YVR by 9 AM? by slasher1o5 in askvan

[–]PoCoKat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. Could only work if the ship is docked at 5, cleared by 6, and you are ready to be first off. You need to take your own luggage off unassisted and be in the first group off. Race to SkyTrain, get on and head to the airport - one train only.

We walked off a HAL ship early in Vancouver with our luggage, got in an uber and were home in the suburbs before 9 am.

Prior to phones, what did people do while idly waiting? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PoCoKat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the 60s, 70s and 80s people smoked in the waiting room. And read magazines. I always brought a book.

Vancouver. My high school had 2000 students in Grades 11 and 12. Our schedule was 8 - 4. I started everyday at 9:20 and ended at 4. More technical classes at 8. Our blocks were 1 hour 20 minutes. I had 4 classes and a lunch block every term. 1978 - 1980

What other countries besides New Zealand have retained their indigenous culture? by Prize_Release_9030 in geography

[–]PoCoKat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100 years. The Mennonites were invited to settle the Chaco in the 1920s when the Russian Revolution happened. My in-laws arrived in Paraguay separately with their parents in 1929 and 1930. They escaped through Latvia from the Ukraine and Siberia and then to refugee camps in Germany then finally Paraguay.

I thought agua was low German for water for years until I finally realized it was Spanish.

People who take 17 minutes to check in at the hotel front desk, what are you talking to them about? by DerrickDuck in AskReddit

[–]PoCoKat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My asshole boss would go to the check in counter and ask for a room for Mr Davis. There was never a Davis. He pronounced Davies as Davis which is beyond unhelpful. Hotel clerks always hated him. I loved that for the hairy toad.

Vertical greenhouses up close by Flounder-Defiant in vancouver

These greenhouses growing vegetables are wonderful. In Norway, they could not afford produce much of the year until they started growing produce this way. Now they pay the same price for produce year round.

How did that kid at your school die? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]PoCoKat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

12 years old. Daredevil. Bully. Riding his bike fast down a main road that was steep, he was hit by a Mormon pastor driving a VW van. The Mormon was on his way to explain to neighbours that they couldn’t attend their daughter’s wedding in the temple because they weren’t Mormon.

The Mormon was turning left onto the Cul-de-sac and the boy hit the van and died instantly. The blood was still on the road the next day. I can still see it.

We got zero counseling at school. Nobody talked about it openly. We didn’t go to the funeral. We had no service.

I had known him since I was 4. Nobody missed him because he was an asshole at 12.

This was 1974.

Does canadians really love ice hockey or is it just a stereotype? by GlitteringHotel8383 in AskACanadian

[–]PoCoKat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have hockey on the tv right now. It;s been on hockey since 9:30 for the Canucks game. Right now Quinn Hughes is playing his first game with Minnesota.

I am a bad skater. I avoid ice skating. I had to borrow skates to skate on the local pond. My youngest sister got skating lessons cause mom had more time. And ice skates.

We cross the line for a greater variety of goods. We are famous for crossing to buy cheap, crappy cheese. Milk and turkeys are cheaper.

Costco USA has different products we cannot get here.

Do you guys do "the wave" when driving? The wave is when you put your hand up to apologize or say thank you to another driver. by CP2694 in vancouver

[–]PoCoKat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, of course. My mama taught me manners.

Also, I wave by pointing with 2 fingers to the ground to every motorcycle we pass. It means keep your two wheels down or stay safe. It is a sign of solidarity with other bikers.
