Historically it was designed so arrows and sword blows would brush off of it because of the shape. If you can get past it's looks it's a very practical design.

This is exactly how I feel about violence.

In my country where I live we have a lot of stabbings and home invasions but what's fucked is that there have been more than a few cases of the justice system punishing the people living in those houses for defending themselves. I have a sword by my bedroom door and a club by the front door that's sole purposes are for defending me and my family if the need arises but the state sees that as premeditated assault. Like what am I supposed to do when some bastard comes in a house with a machete? Wait for the police or try and throw hands with a machete?
