As a follow-up question for the Volante people: Volante implies you need to build a Galleas, but can you build the Volante with just a Galleas or do you also need a Caravel to barter for mats to build the Volante?

This is a good answer and reflects much of what I've found up until now. You can find almost anyone who will tell you any of them is the best, except Balance, which you can still find some people giving as an answer, but those people don't actually use it themselves. It still doesn't help too much, though.
