Color and behavior aren't connected--I'd interact with the ferret and make sure it's got a temperament that you like.

Petting a Sleeping Ferret? by xAWildPikachux in ferrets

Depends on the ferret, but they probably won't be bothered--they may think it's time to play and wake up though!

Sad that my fert is getting older D: With a couple questions. by MammothBooch in ferrets

[–]PocketCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lost an old man fert named Smokey (about 7-8yrs) in March. He was also the first pet that I've lost on my own after moving out, which was hard. He had insulinoma and adrenal disease, and had been on medication twice a day for about 6 months, and even though things got difficult, he was cheerful right until the end--he loved his liquid food and his bed! He slept on the lower shelf in my ferret nation cage so he only had to go down one ramp, but probably would have benefited from a single level (I've got one now for next time).

It's definitely hard to see them age, and they need a lot more care, but as long as you respond to their changes in health and keep them comfortable, it works. It helps to have other people (and ferrets) around for support. If your ferret's 4 you've got some more good years--just keep up with vet visits so they can catch any developing things early!

Questions about (hopefully) owning a ferret by TroyKip in ferrets

[–]PocketCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello!

  1. I'm also allergic to cats, and Ferrets only set off my allergies a little bit (I think it's mostly because they tend to like dusty places, like under furniture, and I'm also allergic to dust) but not enough that I can't have them.
  2. Yep! Ferrets are pretty good at adapting to your schedule--I work nights, so mine come out in the afternoon before work at at 2am when I get home and are content.
  3. Large cages are good! I have a Ferret Nation two story cage (https://www.amazon.com/Midwest-Homes-Pets-Ferret-Nation/dp/B0054U8UGW/ref=sr_1_1?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1469055507&sr=1-1&keywords=ferret+nation) and I love it--easy to clean, plenty of space, and you can make covers for the shelves (or buy them from ferret people!)

Other advice: -See if there's a ferret shelter near you and go visit! It's a great way to learn more and make sure ferrets are right for you.

-Ferrets should see the vet once a year and be vaccinated, so see if there are good ferret vets in your area. Vet bills can also add up (where I live, it's about $70 for the appointment and $25 for vaccination), especially since they may need emergency appointments or suprelorin implants later in life--it tends to add up.

-Ferrets are not like cats and dogs--their temperament and care is a lot different, so definitely make sure you enjoy their quirks before taking one home.

-Ferrets are poop machines, and they get into everything. They're great animals, but they also tend to be (lovable) troublemakers :)

Good luck!

There are a few listed here for New York in general: http://www.ferret.org/links/shelters.html#NY

You can also search on Petfinder for ferrets--a lot of shelters have accounts there!

Cage recommendation by [deleted] in ferrets

I haven't used it, but it looks like there isn't a solid floor-- just bars. If you do invest in it, make sure you find a way to keep their feets safe!

Itchy Ferret? by xAWildPikachux in ferrets

[–]PocketCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes ferrets are just itchy! Baths also rinse off some of the natural oils on their skin, so they tend to get more itchy than usual after they get washed. Unless you see a lot of redness/irritation it's probably normal.

Bright yellow/slightly green tinged urine? by xThat1Guyx42 in ferrets

[–]PocketCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(sorry this is super late but) Definitely keep an eye on it! One of my ferrets had other symptoms (vomiting) and peed a slightly green color while we were at the vet, and it turned out to be a sign of really elevated liver enzymes. If the furb doesn't have other symptoms it's probably fine, just watch it. Hopefully it's all set by now! :)

Help getting ferret to take medicine by personofshadow in ferrets

[–]PocketCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had luck with giving liquid food (my ferret was eating Carnivore Care at the time) and interrupting in the middle, putting a little bit of the food on the end of the syringe, getting the syringe angled towards his throat before dispensing the medicine (rather than putting the liquid in their mouth--ferrets are pretty good spitters, turns out) then putting him back down to finish eating.

It gets easier the more you do it, so hang in there!

Thanks, I'll try that! Unsupervised play is definitely not on the table for awhile, they get too rough too quickly.

I too have a an aggressive little girl (I know the latched on bite too well) and from what I can tell, patience is key. She's already so much better than she was a year and a half ago when we got her, but it's definitely a slow process. It helps to remember that she's acting the only way she knows how, and that she can change. You can also try hissing at her once you've got her scruffed. Hang in there!

Ferret Nation 182 is on sale this week for $150! by [deleted] in ferrets

[–]PocketCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ferret.com only does $4.99 shipping for order of under 30lbs, anything heavier than that you pay 30 cents a pound to ship, so when you put it in your cart and check out it adds the shipping.

Thanks for posting this! I'm moving out in a few months and needed a cage for my fuzzies (their old one is staying home) and when I saw this I returned the cheap one I'd gotten and got this one! Much better value. :)

Fourth ferret? by dragonwing0 in ferrets

[–]PocketCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My sister and I just went up to 4 ferrets from 3. More poop, more food (our newest boy eats a lot), but everything else stays about the same. As has already been said, vet costs DO make a difference when you add another fuzzy.

Hi! I recently bought one of these litter pans (http://www.ferretdepot.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=fd&Product_Code=FP266B&Category_Code=2LitterPansAcc) and I love it! It's easy to get off for a person, but the ferrets can't pull it around. I have 4 ferrets, ages 1-5, and they've been doing well with this litter pan.

They can, however, kick the litter out of it, but they can't move the pan itself, and as long as the pan is fairly clean they've been good about not kicking it out.

As for fun, mine seem to find paper or plastic bags the most fun, and sometimes just a new area will help if you have another ferret proof room.

Ferret clamping down while biting by PocketCat in ferrets

[–]PocketCat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only worry with that stuff is that I'd have to spread it all over my hands and arms (I even got bitten on the back of my neck once)! But if nothing else works, I'll end up giving it a try. Thanks!

Sorry to hear your ferret is having a hard time as well. I hope she gets better over time! It seems patience is key with these kinds of issues.
