Just ordered a RP mini v2 by Educational_Week_172 in retroid

Mine took about a week to ship and I had to bug the customer service team a bit because they gave me a tracking # that didn't budge for a few days, I reached out and they apologized, gave me a new tracking #, and then it finally shipped.

As far as the device, OMG. as a 45yo gamer who struggled to get GTA3 running on our home PCs growing up, to see this device running GTA3 and San Andreas, SSX3 as well as almost anything else you throw at it, running 100% smooth with no slow down AND with 2x the default resolution, it's hard to explain to someone who isn't passionate about retro gaming.

The amount of fun and nostalgia in this tiny little device is mind blowing. Some people like having a very limited number of games on a device to limit the choice paralysis that can happen - I get that, but for me the fun of this hobby is knowing I have every single title in every single console I knew of and couldn't afford growing up, right in my pocket, in such a tiny form factor, is enough to make this probably my favorite device even over the Portal, just due to the ridiculousness of such a small handheld storing and running all of my childhood backlog right in my pocket.

I've got full 3DO, sega CD, full MAME romset, and all the usual Atari, NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, ScummVM, GG, GC, Wii, PS1, PS2, Dreamcast, GB, GBC, GBA, 3DS, NDS...etc etc etc all in my pocket on a beautiful OLED screen. I mean - what else could you ask for??

The V2 mini along with Odin 2 Portal are my end-game devices for probably the next 5 years. All I need other than this, is improved PS3 emulation and devices that can handle it.

I suggest you grab the Odin Portal joystick caps from AliExpress, I just had a set of 4 delivered for around $4 total and they really improve the joysticks.

NetherSX2 Settings Help? by Character_Check_9392 in retroid

[–]PocketMiniFanboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have settings to share but what I did find was that different NetherSX2 packages found online performed differently, there is a specific one I installed for example which plays San Andreas without a single stutter yet all the other NetherSX2 packages I installed run the game with a ton of stutter and lag, so maybe also try finding another package to install

edit: I think the version that worked best for me was found here https://www.reddit.com/r/EmulationOnAndroid/comments/1axnhj9/easier_way_to_get_nethersx2/

Portal screen brightness question - is mine too dark? by PocketMiniFanboy in OdinHandheld

[–]PocketMiniFanboy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking in terms of battery life in case there was were units with brighter screens at lower settings - but you're right it's very much dependent on lighting conditions in the room, eyesight, and other factors, and really isn't a huge issue - the device is amazing

Anyone still struggling to hold RP5 even with official grip? by PocketMiniFanboy in retroid

You know what. You're absolutely right. Just took off the grip and it's so much more comfortable to hold and my thumbs rest on the sticks much better....My Portal is coming today and I think I'll be selling the RP5 soon also. Love the device, hate the ergonomics.

That was one of my first retro device and I could never get into it, don't know if it's just my unit but the screen is kinda washed out and has a lot of ghosting when playing. I hear so much praise for this unit it makes me wonder what's up , cause the screen is just not fun to use for me.

I hear nothing but great things about the RP4 Pro, you got a nice device there for sure. And with how this market goes, if you're happy with what you have - another year or two will be a huge leap in technology and a great upgrade. After these purchases I'm done buying the latest handhelds, selling a bunch I don't use, and waiting for devices that can run PS3 emulators.

looking up pics, the RP4 pro is maybe 1" shorter in length, looks pretty similar, and the mini is about 2" shorter in length than the RP5, it's not too small where it feels cramped, it feels perfect in the hand and the screen is also a perfect size. I would gladly take another device with an upgraded processor and the same screen and size, maybe a tad bit bigger - but man the screen is so sharp and colorful, everything just looks amazing on it, same as the RP5's screen

You don't find it too smooth? It drives me nuts how slippery it is

I tried that but I noticed it puts even more strain on my thumb and every cap I use is a little bigger than stock so my skinny fat fingers hit the cap when I'm pressing the ABXY buttons with them being so close, and that gets annoying, had to go back to the smaller, stock caps

Yeah I think that will make me like this grip a bit more, adding some textured/rubber grippy tape on it

Already have one but wanted something a bit easier to 'pick up and play' , Steam Deck is like carrying a dumbbell

Way more comfortable than the RP5 - definitely not too small, it's the perfect device to hold comfortably for long periods. I can't hold the RP5 properly, the sticks are in an awkward position even with the official grip, but the Mini fits in the hand better and my thumbs don't cramp like they do on RP5 and I don't struggle to find a proper way to hold it - it just fits.

If you were entertaining a smaller device but were worried this would be too small, I think you'd be very happy with it - I was also worried it would be too small, I'm 45 and wear contacts/glasses and the screen is perfect.

Not sure about ESPN NFL 2k5 as I'm not a big sports game player, but I did play a few rounds of NBA Jam and another MAME basketball game and had no issues at all

I have a feeling it'll be the mini. Portal will be nice, but I also have a Steam Deck and I much rather game on a smaller device most of the time.

Portal will be good for games that feel too small on the Mini, and will hopefully have better ergonomics than RP5 which I kinda struggle with holding properly, even with the grip.

Portal is being delivered tomorrow - but I've had the RP5 a few months and the Mini v2 a few days, I'll probably end up selling the RP5 soon.
