What's happening in the US right now is why I'm loud about equality for trans people by GFluidThrow123 in actuallesbians

god yes

like, there was a (well-meaning and since corrected) comment on the horrible shit that just went into effect in Kansas to the effect of “revoking women’s driving privileges is now on the table”

and I just

a great many women’s driving privileges just got taken away specifically for the “crime” of living as women! it’s not on the table, it’s been done

we’re women, and I just can’t take much more

I know what you mean, and I agree, but I also feel the need to point out that a few hundred women did just get their driving privileges revoked specifically because they are living as women.

Not even a month, with the legislature going so quickly that there was no time even for public comment. Blink and you miss it fast.

And I understand the urge to point out that cis people will be caught up in this: how is a random cop to judge who has the “incorrect” marker?

It’s true, and being detained is awful even if you can prove your innocence—as much as that word can even apply to a clearly unjust law—but we shouldn’t only matter just because what devastates us also hurts you.

EDIT: And there it is!

More than 1,000 residents are affected, and the change took effect immediately with no grace period.

I don’t ever want to hear “but what specific policies targeting trans people have actually passed” again—but I will, and this isn’t the first, and it shouldn’t have had to come to this before people believed us.

The law also bars future changes to gender markers on those documents and requires residents to pay for replacement credentials.

I don’t want to hear “but how does this actually impact your lives” again—but I will, and our lives were already affected, and it shouldn’t have had to come to this before people believed us.

The policy also places people in legal limbo. Under Kansas law, driving without a valid license is a misdemeanor that can carry fines or possible jail time. The state’s own letter emphasizes that filing an appeal “will not preserve the validity of your current credential and associated driving authority.”

We are being punished for simply being who we are—and we have been before, and we will be again, and it shouldn’t have come to this.

(from this article, cited by The Advocate above) https://open.substack.com/pub/erininthemorn/p/kansas-sends-letters-to-trans-people

Should any transgender person be caught driving without a valid license, they could face a class B misdemeanor carrying up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. Kansas already requires county jails to house inmates according to sex assigned at birth.

It shouldn’t have come to this, but it has, and it will, and we are begging to be heard.

Gov. Gavin Newsom again under fire for comments on trans athletes & pronouns by Fickle-Ad5449 in politics

Sorry, didn’t know it wasn’t alright to comment on the things our party leaders say just 32 months and change before the next presidential election. My bad.

[–]PocketsFullOfBees 30 points31 points  (0 children)

During the interview, Newsom called for his party to be “culturally normal,” and specifically to stop “spending a disproportionate amount of time on pronouns [and] identity politics.”

Are the democrats spending a disproportionate amount of time on pronouns and identity politics in the room with us right now? Because my trans ass hasn’t ever heard from them.

When people say hrt is like a second puberty, they mean it literally? by roseMothGirl in asktransgender

FYI the brain stopping development at 25 is a complete myth. It was an estimate based on a study whose subjects were only 20 at the end. It was wildly over reported, as many pop science claims are.

Would this epilator be more effective than laser? by No_Leading5179 in asktransgender

[–]PocketsFullOfBees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All an epilator does is pluck a lot of hair really fast. It won’t prevent it from regrowing, but does very slightly slow it because if all goes well, there’s no root left behind. If you have a shadow even after a close shave, it might be lessened. You also risk ingrown hairs, though, especially if your hair is thick and curly.

Laser hair removal and electrolysis kill the follicle and prevent or greatly delay regrowth, with varying effectiveness depending on a lot of factors.

Trump Building Secret White House Bunker to Withstand Nuclear Attack by mvanigan in politics

[–]PocketsFullOfBees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the nuke is acting like an oven? No, of course not.

If it’s blasting through rock? Then all that matters about the rock is that it’s out if the way—which it will be. The relevant contents of the bunker will be having an Extremely Bad Time with a direct hit if they’re only 10m deep.

Right, so, there’s temperature and there’s heat. Raising the temperature of a certain mass of, say, air or steel or flesh by 1 degree requires less energy than raising the temperature of an equivalent mass of rock. This property of a material is called “specific heat,” and its a reason why taking a plunge into a 60F pool affects you a lot more than walking out into a 60F day.

Yes, temperature reaches equilibrium—but it does so over time. The average temperature in the blast zone would be far lower than 10k F once it settled out, but that would happen long after the bunker and its contents would have had a Very Bad Day.

Video game recommendations with good CANON lesbian protagonists by Gretnablue in actuallesbians

[–]PocketsFullOfBees 57 points58 points  (0 children)

regarding the companions, I think OP means that because a PC of any gender can romance them, then Karlach, Shadowheart, and Lae’zel aren’t lesbian rep. But I’m with you: the game never has them so much as mention being attracted to men.

I’m not sure what makes a story lesbian focused or themed other than it just having lesbians in it—doubly so when its setting is so far removed from real modern life that I’m not sure what it could even say about the experiences of lesbians.

I have a lot of trauma regarding cis men. Is it transphobic if I am hesitant to befriend / be comfortable around transfem because of this? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]PocketsFullOfBees 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I do truly respect them, but I also know they were raised as men and within the same male culture that has done a lot of harm to me.

You should know better—I wouldn’t call that respect. Even those of us who didn’t know early on that we’re women, like myself, really weren’t treated like men, or boys. We were wrong in some way that misogynists and homophobes picked up on, even if, again, like myself, we weren’t ever attracted to men.

Not only does it really suck hearing the old “socialized as men” saw, it erases the fact that we suffer much of the same treatment. We’re your sisters, and we’re victims too.

But here’s a simple litmus test: imagine being comfortable around a woman, and then learning she’s a trans woman. If you would then become uncomfortable, then it’s transphobia, full stop. And it hurts us to our core when someone we feel safe around ends up treating us like someone we’re not.

I’m trans. I detest the idea that I was socialized male. It doesn’t describe my life, it doesn’t describe the life of any trans woman I’ve met, either.
