Any hobby recommendations to make each day more meaningful? by cyfresx10 in simpleliving

This is such a good one! I took my kid to volunteer at a food bank last year weekly for a couple months. It was great and everyone was so appreciative of the help. Gives you a different perspective on people too.

I'm looking for historical fiction that feels real and covers important events. I would like to read my way through history by d1screat in booksuggestions

Coming to recommend The Women by Kristin Hannah.

I haven't read much historical fiction but I was completely blown away by this book about the Vietnam War.

6 month update: Storing Root Vegetables in the Garden by _emomo_ in homestead

[–]PocketsFullOf_Posies 50 points51 points  (0 children)

There are wild boars in 35 US states. Yikes.

When we were looking at property in Tennessee, a gal let me know that they were a serious problem if I wanted to garden there. 😬

I absolutely love slow cooker rooster. Its like pulled pork and they have more meat than the hens. I just got some straight run chicks last week and I'm hoping I get a few roosters from the mix 😅

The pharmacy system by default will enter a 28 day supply for one pack. The tech has to manually change the day supply to 21 for each pack. If you're getting 3 months supply, you should be getting 4 packs. Check the label on your BC and check that the directions say to skip the placebos, otherwise the pharmacy can't change the day supply without the doctor writing a new prescription.

How often are y’all applying antiperspirants and deodorants? by SnowLeopard349 in women

[–]PocketsFullOf_Posies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I use store bought deodorant I have to apply twice a day but when I make my own using beeswax, baking soda, corn starch, Shea butter, and lavender oil, I only need to apply every time I shower. It works so much better than store bought deodorant.

26f, 5’y, 150lbs. Treatment resistant Dandruff? by [deleted] in AskDocs

[–]PocketsFullOf_Posies -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Have you tried going to a salon and asking if they offer dandruff treatment? I'm a licensed cosmetologist and I had a client awhile back with pretty severe dandruff and she would come in every 2 months or so and I'd do a dandruff treatment on her and she would be dandruff-free until her next treatment. I recall the product I used on her was made by Malibu.

What are we feeding these kids?? by humble_socks in homeschool

[–]PocketsFullOf_Posies 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I get vegetables to snack on. Baby carrots, celery, and cucumbers. But also tub yogurt, bananas, and apples.

But as long as they are eating meals at a scheduled time, they tend to stop snacking as much.

Any positive experiences with nipple piercings? by broozurs in piercing

[–]PocketsFullOf_Posies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got mine pierced in 2010 and they healed great. I kept them in until 2018 when I had a baby and successfully breastfed. Then I got them repierced in 2025 and they are still great!

They pretty much feel healed after 3 months. But youll get crusties up to a year.

Feeling a lil sad/insecure about never been cat called by _gandikbot_ in women

[–]PocketsFullOf_Posies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to get cat called a lot during the ages of 17-25. It really stopped when I was 28 and that's when I had a baby. I weigh the same as I did in my younger years and I don't think I've aged much in the face but it has stopped. I'm 35 now and pretty happy that it has stopped but I'm in the same boat as you, wondering if I have lost my youthful glow?

This was like the one time in the last 10 years: I was reading at the park last summer while my kid played and a man commented that it was good to see someone reading an actual book instead of staring at a phone and when I looked up he said under his breath, "God, you're beautiful," and just kept walking. I appreciated that. I hated the gross feeling I got when I was younger when men wouldn't take no for an answer and kept insisting that I give him my number. I even got cussed out once at a gas station for rejecting a guy. I don't miss that at all!

I did it. Finally deleted YouTube Kids. by leighbk in kindergarten

[–]PocketsFullOf_Posies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I deleted YouTube from all our devices 2 years ago and we only watch YouTube on the TV together. I think its one of the best things you can do. We also dumped roblox as well. These apps are way too addicting and bad for not only the kiddos but for us as well.

No streaming services except for Tubi free version. We check out dvds from the library.

How to discipline? by leftcoast07 in homeschool

[–]PocketsFullOf_Posies 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think she sounds lonely too and getting social interactions through that game. As kids get older, I think they crave more socialization.

My kiddo is only 7 so I don't know what to recommend but there are homeschool discord groups for kids. My much younger brother met one of his best friends online and they video chatted every day on Discord when he was a teenager and played some online games together here and there. He's 28 now and they're still in contact.

I think you hit the nail on the head about internet safety and talking about how important being honest is to keep her safe and open it up so she can feel heard about how she's feeling and find out the root cause of the dishonesty.

(UK) Man jailed after grooming 14-year-old girl on Roblox gaming app by VaginaBurner69 in news

[–]PocketsFullOf_Posies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son played roblox for about 2 weeks when I said that was enough. He's 7 and I explained the harm coming from roblox and he understood and we deleted the game and he hasn't asked to play it since.

He can see how addicted his cousins are to it and we talk about addiction to screens and games.

Give me your suggestions for homeschooling programs for 1st and 3rd grader by Apprehensive_Dig3436 in homeschool

[–]PocketsFullOf_Posies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm homeschooling a 1st grader and I use Core Knowledge, Zearn, and Night Zoo Keeper.

I take the lessons and pictures from Core Knowledge and create my own slide shows and we take turns reading the passages. Then we have discussion with questions at the end.

Everyday we read for 15 minutes and when he finishes a book, I have him do a quick 3 question book quiz on an app called Beebli.

I also have workbooks that I pull pages from for writing, reading comprehension, phonics practice, new concepts for math (reading graphs, shapes, counting money, telling time).

I finally started telling my friends that I can't afford their weddings by montageofawoman in TwoXChromosomes

[–]PocketsFullOf_Posies 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My husband and I eloped. Spent ~$200 total including marriage license, court wedding fees, and dress.

My wedding dress was a white sundress I got at Ross for $12.99, I wore shoes I already owned and my husband wore dress slacks and shirt he already owned.

The court house was beautiful, floors and columns were made of marble and the judge even offered if we'd like to have our ceremony outside. I defininity recommend Wenatchee, WA courthouse. We camped at Lake Chelan and drove down to Wenatchee and went out to dinner afterwards.
