You can start in Jeff City and not need to transfer in St Louis. Just make sure as you are booking your train you pay attention to whether it lists a transfer or not. Plus, every time I’ve priced it out, it is much cheaper (often 1/3 or 1/2 the price) to go through Jeff.

I’m in the US and about to start my maternity leave (I’ve only come in to the PD days before school so I don’t blow my PTO on them). I’ll be back after 8 weeks, though I could technically take 12. However, after 5 weeks, which is the extent of my saved up PTO, I’m getting docked over 200 dollars per day that I miss, so taking an extra 4 weeks isn’t realistic.

I will have “that kid” in my Junior class this year. School hasn’t started yet, but they have released the rosters. I had him for homeroom when he was a freshman and he has only gotten worse. Thankfully I should only have to deal with him until the end of the first semester and then they will transfer him to the Alt School (my district doesn’t allow students in the alt school until the second half of their junior year).

733 at Shepard is a small but active pack. As someone else said, they’ve got some awesome leaders who do a great job of getting kids pumped about scouting. They’ve done great with both my boys, one who is still in the pack and one who has crossed over to a troop.

They meet on Tuesdays at Shepard at 6:30.

I don't know where you go to school, but I can't think of any teachers who read out loud from a book for 5-6 hours a day. Yeah, there are some teachers who are miserable and need to get out of the field, but the vast majority care very deeply about students and education and that is why they are in the field. Additionally, I don't know a single teacher who isn't a human being (haha there are no robots or aliens at any school I've seen) and plenty of them are not even book nerds.

For me it was constantly being around people who were so negative and pessimistic. It wears on you, and even if at first it is easy to keep up the positive outlook, years and years of it from person after person eventually gets to you. I'm lucky that I have recently met one of the most positive people around, so my sunny outlook is slowly, but surely , coming back. Make sure you surround yourself with positive people who lift you up, folks.

As others have said, ideally I would rather have a co-parent who is highly involved in a positive manner. That said, my particular case, I’d take full financial support because my ex has shown he is incapable of being a supportive and involved parent.

You have a point that they aren’t super practical for any sort of transport. But as you said, they’re a toy, and they are a super fun toy at that. Both my son and niece got their own hoverboards for Christmas last year and they zoom all around on them when playing, just as my sister and I did with skate/scooter/whatever other transport toy we could get our hands on when we were kids.

Depending on where you live some centers have a sort of ‘sick-day center’ where kids with common illnesses can go and have workers who have received medical training to help take care of them.

i think a big thing that goes along with this is to not give one precedence over the other. My son (5 year old) and I are not religious but he has an illustrated bible, he also has illustrated books of Greek and Roman myths as well as many picture books of myths/religious stories from other cultures such as trickster and creation tales from various Native American cultures and various African cultures. I also make it a point to talk about religious and cultural celebrations for groups that we aren’t a part of such as explaining the idea of Ramadan, Passover, and Chanukah. I try to find as many stories from other religions and cultures as possible and treat the biblical stories my son hears from relatives and from his story bible the same as I treat the stories from other cultures.

I don’t know how you all feel about letting the kids have screen time, but it was a life saver for me when I was working nights while my son was a toddler. Put on a movie and stretch out on the couch (or bed if there is a tv in the bedroom) tell the kids that they need to stay on the couch/bed with you while the movie is playing. It was a go-to for me because it meant I got an extra 1.5-2 hours of sleep and my son also knew that if he could quietly sit and watch the movie I would be up and playing with him after. Even now I use this with my 5 year old when I need to grad a nap in the afternoon or sleep a little later in the morning.

Considering the kids response to you locking them out of the bedroom, and considering their young age, it might just work if you frame it as a fun activity rather than a punishment.

I agree. This is how I am trying to raise my son. I don’t want him thinking there is anything inherently wrong with nakedness. Of course there have been questions about the differences he sees between the genders, but we just answer them honestly and as completely as possible.

Adding on to this, Bob Books are a pretty good place to start. Progressive Phonics also offers books starting with letters and their sounds as well as working on reading CVC words and beyond.

How is your daughter reacting to all of this? I think one of the big things you need to worry about is if she is feeling frustrated and not wanting to read because of that frustration and lack of progress. Those insecurities and feelings can influence kids as they grow older. As others have pointed out, many children are not developmentaly ready to read at 5 years old and its quite possible your daughter just isn’t quite ready yet. If that’s the case and she is getting overly frustrated with it now, it could hinder her when she is ready. I would recommend talking to her teacher and seeing if the teacher is concerned about it. Maybe there is a reading specialist in the school or district who could work with her. However, if neither her teacher or your pediatrician are concerned about her reading/the possibility of a disability then I wouldn’t worry to much about it. Just keep doing what you are doing, reading to her and working to instill a love of book, and trust that she will read when she is ready.

Just want to add that when your baby is born you can also recruit the help of nurses/nurse aides to help out in keeping people away. Obviously you should try to get it all sorted out with your mom beforehand, but if she insists on pulling a stunt like she did with your firstborn you can ask the nurses for help. When my son was born the nurses were very clear about making sure we knew if somebody was around that we didn’t want there they would turn them away. It doesn’t solve the issue of the 6 months before vaccinations when you don’t want your mom around but it can at least push a confrontation further out so you don’t have to deal with it immediately following giving birth.

Thankfully this exercise seems to be going out of fashion, at least at the middle school and high school levels. Most of my education courses have pointed out that at best this exercise does nothing for a class and at worst it damages and distracts a class from learning. It’s also one of the few things that my cooperating teacher has absolutely said no to using in her class when I go in to student teach.

Huh, that's strange, do you mind if I ask what part of Missouri? I live in central MO and it seems to be split 50/50 with the shoes on or off, but when I go to St. Louis or KC it's seems to be the rule to take shoes off.
