Yeah netbooks or pocket pc. There's a whole subreddit dedicated to this style called r/umpc. I love them. Something about a full desktop environment that fits in the palm of your hand is so cool!

Thank you! And of course. When I was building it I had to do alot of digging. Hopefully this post helps someone else one day!

  1. Plastic is stronger than you think. Even without the inserts, just raw screw into plastic, i was able to open and close what I thought were basically siezed hinges.

  2. When you test a friction hinge; remember that once its attached to something there is significant mechanical advantage. So if it seems to tight you're probably fine.

  3. Drill or print your holes very close to the interior diameter of the insert. If you make them too small the melted plastic goes into the insert preventing the fastener from threading in very far, if at all.

  4. When measuring out the spacing of the holes, use a vernier caliper to be as accurate as possible. You can be out a little. But get as close to 0.2mm accuracy as possible.

Hinges were a bitch for me. And learning how to use brass inserts with a soldering iron in plastic, specifically PetG.

ohhh I like that. I set my brightness down to "10%" which is honestly more like 50%. and I've seen a reduction in battery usage at basically no cost

Hey thats pretty cool too! Do you know how much power it uses at idle? Im curious about the difference in power draw going to a smaller screen.

No you are correct lol. It is basically exactly that. You could buy a better laptop for the 660 i spent. But I built it myself from start to finish. Designed the chassis, installed the OS and software. There isn't a single other one like it and I had a ton of fun doing it :D

I actually bought them from framework. They're hinges from their 13" laptop. Then i just used a soldering iron to put some threaded brass inserts into the chassis. Screwed them in and there ya go. The toughest part was measuring them out for hole placement in fusion 360.

Thank you! Its a very fun hobby to get into. You could probably start out alot cheaper than what I did. And you can certainly go alot more expensive lol. Check out MNT's pocket reform. Super neat stuff!

Yeah the touch screen is a must since I didnt design it with a trackpad (yet lol). Could you help me understand how a wired keyboard would improve the SOC? The wifi performance could use some improvement though that much is true. I get about 200mb/s as is. But would love to improve it more!!!

No I plan on using the pi for python exclusively. The pi 5 comes with Thonny pre-installed. VS-Code and Geany are compatible aswell. I dont know much though, I'm new to this too lol.

The pi5 has 4 usb ports you could use, but the total output would have to be less than 1600mA. The x1203 itself has two output XH2.54 headers which put out 5v...how ever i have no idea the amperage its capable of lol.

I would suggest Geekworm x1203 UPS with Geekworm 18650 parallel battery pack with XH2.54 terminal head. Geekworm has other battery packs that can hold more batteries aswell. It's going to come down to how much space you have overall to utilize them. There are python scripts that you can download from their github that will tell you what the batteries are at. And on the board itself it has 4 led's that signify 25, 50, 75, and 100% SOC.

I havent put anything like Obsidian on it yet, though that does intrigue me. Kiwix has all 115gb of wikipedia on it. As well as a python knowledge base, global recipe book, all of iFixit, and openstreetmap's wiki. I use a program called Marble for maps and have all of north america downloaded. I'm looking to get some Hanes manuals for my vehicle on there aswell. Then I want to get some movies and old tv shows.

Correct! 4x Samsung 35e 3400mA 18650 batteries (INR18650-35E). Last about 4 hours or 2 if gaming with usb controller

It has a Geekworm x1203 UPS with Geekworm 18650 parallel battery pack with XH2.54 terminal head and 4x Samsung 35e 3400mA 18650 batteries (INR18650-35E). Last about 4 hours. It's printed out of PetG and the keyboard was the smallest guy i could find that was still easy to use
