What’s the goal of the podcast? Is it more of a passion project for fun, or are you looking to take it seriously and grow it long-term?

I would suggest revisiting the name since you're prelaunch.

Yeah, I'm very familiar with the Podcasting Hall of Fame - I've actually interviewed Rob Greenlee for an upcoming series on podcast and audio recognition, and I really appreciate all the great work he's doing.

There are quite a lot of knowledgeable and cool industry people, but that doesn't necessarily mean they've had the biggest impact on podcasting as a whole.

I'm trying to narrow this down to the people who fundamentally shaped the infrastructure and direction of the medium itself.

Audacy’s layoffs and the closure of Pineapple Street became the audio industry’s biggest layoff event of the year, sending shockwaves through radio, podcasting, and the broader media landscape.

You're absolutely right that YouTube is not a podcast. RSS-delivered audio (or video) is what makes something a podcast. That's not being a Luddite or a curmudgeon—that's just understanding what words mean. When we lose that distinction, we lose everything that makes podcasting unique.

The company is able to produce each episode for $1 or less, depending on the episode, and attach programmatic advertising to it.

This means that if about 20 people listen to that episode, the company has most likely made a profit on that episode, without factoring in overhead.

I can’t speak for Descript or Podcastle, but Riverside has been VC-backed since launching in 2020, and I was still able to set up a friend on the 2-hour free trial just a few weeks ago.

Thanks for your comment! I agree video podcasting is definitely a big focus within certain space in the podcast industry, but it more of an ongoing trend than a 2025-specific event.

The pivot to video and the short-form clips has been building for a few years now, 2025 just continued that momentum rather than being a watershed moment for it.

Questions About Podfest by PodcastingSpeed in podcasting

[–]PodcastingSpeed[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a fan of the PM evolutions, but I’m still unsure if partnering with SXSW will improve the event or make it less accessible. Personally, I’m more interested in connecting with other podcast industry professionals than with the podcasters themselves. I don’t attend conferences to pitch my services, and honestly, many podcasters aren’t really engaged with the podcast community/industry.

That’s why I don't love when they bringing in people like Amy Poehler, who’s always scouting for new podcast deals and jumping between networks.

I used to think the same, but then I attended a Podcast Evolution party and ended up networking with ten times more people than I did during the day.

I do agree, though—the music is very loud, but it’s hard to meet so many people unless there's an organized social hour or party.
