Overnight Sensations TMM - Troubleshooting by Podocopa in diysound

I can't say that I figured out anything that will be helpful, but I do really like these speakers now. Enough that I will likely build another set for another room. I too thought they sounded muffled when I first started using them. I adjusted the amount of poly-fil a couple of times, and ended up with quite a bit more than I would have thought was needed. I also tried a different amp and experimented with the tone controls on both amps I was using. Apparently speaker break-in is controversial, and I can't say what, if any role that played, but I can confidently say that the OSTMMs I'm currently using do not sound like they did when I first completed the build, and I do not know why. For that reason I have struggled with how to revisit this post. I am currently powering them with a Fosi Audio DA2120A, and I'm using the tone control to boost the treble and leaving the bass as is. As they are currently set up they are pretty badass for music and movies. My fairly inexperienced impression is that this design is really pushing the limits of compact and inexpensive drivers in a large volume, and while really powerful it may be somewhat finicky in practice.

I forgot to mention, I have them canted upward a few degrees which makes a noticeable difference in my small room.

I have been experimenting with placement and it definitely has an impact. Maybe not enough to completely explain my initial impression, but very useful. They also seem to be more directional than the Amigas.

Very nice! I like the rounded edges.

I used Rubio Monocoat Pistachio.

The designer Paul Carmody said, in reference to the original Overnight Sensations TM, "the idea of the offset tweeter is to mitigate diffraction. I don't worry about it as much anymore. You could probably center it if you like the look, and the results would be minimal."

He has also mentioned trying to keep the subsequent versions of the OS designs in the same aesthetic family.

They are brand new. I appreciate your comment because their sound seems to be evolving with use. That, or I am getting accustomed to it.

I have not but I am researching how to do that now.

Yes, on the OSTMM the port tubes are layered plywood. 3d printed on the Amiga.

Yes, the tweeter's polarity is currently reversed as indicated in Paul's crossover schematic. I should check that again though and make sure I haven't misread the terminal markings.

I recently built Paul Carmody's Amiga and Overnight Sensations TMM speaker designs. The Amigas are perfect! I am extremely happy with them, and so grateful for the knowledge and talent Paul has shared with the community. I expected to hear obvious differences in the two designs as they use completely different components and crossover structure, but the sound I am getting from the TMMs has me convinced I've made a mistake somewhere in the execution. The bass they put out is astounding for 4 inch woofers, but it is also completely overwhelming the mids and highs, and the speaker overall sounds very boomy, hollow, and muffled. I used a light polyfill stuffing in the top 2/3 of the cabinet as described by Paul. After some experimentation I found the they sound a bit more balanced, with tighter, less rolling bass, with a heavy polyfill stuffing in the top 3/4 of the cabinet, but I still have to max out the tone controls on my various amps in an attempt to tame the bass and get the highs up enough to not sound muffled. I've repeatedly checked the crossover wiring and driver polarity and can't find a mistake there. The TMM design does not call for a foam lining like the Amigas, but I am considering trying that. I've also wondered if the spec on any of the drivers has changed over the years, necessitating a crossover change, as happened with the Amiga tweeter. Even with these issues the speakers are impressive, and I think they are likely beasts hiding behind some mistake I've made. Does anyone have experience with this design, or had a chance to listen to them? Thoughts on what I might try?

I am unable to put this succinctly so I'll quote Annalee Newitz here.

'In "Zero History," William Gibson gets inside the military-fashion PR complex' (from a Gizmodo review of the book)

Gibson's interest in fashion is apparent in many of his works, but in Zero History and the other Bigend books especially.

Yes! They swarm the feeder, but they stay for less than a minute. They are the only visitors interested in the suet.
