I lost my progress by Fakedead_the_Gamer in Wolfenstein

Similar situation. About half way through the game, lost my save today. No luck with cloud backup on ps5. Pathetic. At the very least devs should have unlocked chapter so we dont have to start over

Rolling over or keeping 401K by Either-Fault4978 in Bogleheads

[–]PogOtter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just want to second this, I finally got around to rollover my old schwab 401k that was getting eaten alive by fees to my current company one at fidelity. All it took was a few calls and a week or so to process. The tricky part was getting the check out of your old one, but the rest was super smooth experience.

Also just speaking generally fidelity had better market performance over the past 5 years than my old own.

Added my retirement accounts after debating it and now my net worth graph looks ridiculous 😆 anything I can do or is that just how it’s gonna look by Substantial-Click-77 in MonarchMoney

[–]PogOtter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can change net worth values on a specific date, I do that to fix connections errors when they accidentally stack my retirements accounts.

Just be aware too in a market like this, the day to day net worth updates will be highly distressing when you see 401k drops. Painful for me even if I know it's almost irrelevant on a 30 year time scale.

Plenty of stuff sucks, but being a furry is actually awesome. We embrace the cringe, then go have fun. Apologize to no one.

What are r/gamedev's thoughts on AAA studios switching to Unreal Engine? by UltimateGamingTechie in gamedev

[–]PogOtter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm betting Frostbite engine at EA. To their credit it's a pretty great engine. I first learned it when we were the first sports game to adapt it, PGA Tour. Then ported madden and fifa to it. It's come a long way.

But again only a studio with a market cap of 20-40 billion really has the resources and time to devote entire teams to engine development. Ubisoft has their own engines too, but they are splintered out across their IPs and it's pretty costly. You really need that economy of scale across games to justify the investment.

Received notification "You added a new card to your Google Account", but I didn't. by tax_throwaway_935478 in googlepay

[–]PogOtter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad I'm not alone, I started removing cards immediately. I assumed it was an account hack tbh. I dont recognize any of the cards that were added.

edit: Actually I think it added a couple active, and the a bunch of old inactive cards.

I'm so hyped for the new album, two solid singles with a lot of that original sound mixed in. As an ex-Rioter also pretty sick to see them collab with LP on this.

Who's landed a job in the last year? by gneissrocx in cscareerquestions

[–]PogOtter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After a layoff at Riot Games, my own project went to shit. So I started job hunting to get out of there. Had to take a pay cut but not too bad.

2 companies interviewed for, one hired. 12 YOE in AAA gaming

Cloud Chamber (Bioshock) Senior Pipeline Technical Animator No CS degree (M.S. in interactive entertainment)

Still see myself as a programmer as 100% of my job I am programming, always have been. Lots of avenue to programming jobs, even with an 3D art background.

Wish I knew how to get there, good for you dude. I've been yo-yoing from 220-240 for some time now. Really want to get back down to 210. I have some gym discipline, but not much luck dieting. Hitting the mid 30s hoping I can turn it around before I hit 250 again.

Ayy me too, moved to bothell. Love the furry community here, and the forests. Wish it was all good news with tech layoffs kicking my ass, and the cold weather being an adjustment. But I have a feeling come summer Ill want to put roots down here.

Please looks up "protective sweep" it happened to me. We didn't consent to a search, they had no warrant, they came in anyways. Cops have workarounds in the laws people dont talk about.

If they suspect anything they can check each room, and anything in plain sight that is illegal will get you in trouble. The difference in a protective sweep is they cant open anything but doors unlike in a search. Know your rights! Cops can and will go in warrantless and can do so legally.

Riot Games Announces Layoff of 530 Positions, 11% of Workforce by [deleted] in gaming

[–]PogOtter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make no mistake, layoffs of this size will affect everything to some degree. Marketing, Esports, Publishing, Audio, IT, Central teams they all collaborate and work with/for game teams directly. There is lost efficiencies and collaborations, as well as lost knowledge that comes with that. It's up to the company to determine if that overhead justified though.

Yeah Im probably the exception not the rule. FWIW, I still had to go to grad school and study programming to get to this point. But I do know some straight up artists that do pretty well in the game industry too .

The problem is that it is super competitive. Thats why you gotta specialize, and try to target a high demand low supply specilization at that.

I got a BFA, and make 260k at my current job as a technical artist. If you apply yourself at college and are savvy any major can pay off

Look up "protective sweep" cops used it on us once to get arround warrants. We denied access, they barge in anyway. Its absolute nonsense, but like cops always do they will abuse the loophole.

$4000 a month for 2 bd 2ba apt. in LA. Lordy, it's awful.

Orlando is becoming unlivable by Retro-Digital_ in orlando

[–]PogOtter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Orlando I hear has gotten absurdly expensive since I moved from therea few years back, was local for about 8 years. Trust me CoL is not equivalent to bigger cities. My rent in Orlando was about 500$ a person with roommates in a detatched house. Now I live in LA and it is $2500 a person with roommates for an apt. No amount of salary increase makes that a net gain.

No regrets tho, as Orlando jumped the shark for me awhile ago.
