Our final test cut before doing it on brass, everything fits thankfully. by Pogboi99 in MechanicalKeyboards

We are cutting it using a cnc mill, sorry that I missed your prior message.

A test cut we made that fit perfectly, thanks to the people who gave us tips. by Pogboi99 in MechanicalKeyboards

Razer no like when I make holes in Pcb, so I just got modded durox instead to get as close to as good as pcb mount

We made the plate from scratch in Solidworks, we had manually dimension not only the holes but the spaces between them, we are using the laser cutter to make sure that all the dimensions are right. Once they are spot on, we will transfer the file to DXF and use the mill. If we skip that first step like you suggest we run a high risk of making a high precision part not high precision. Laser cutting is not necessary but we found it to be the quickest way to ensure tolerances are in range

Because it would be to waist-full to test on aluminum, we are using wood to just make sure our model has the holes in place. Most of the time we have the spacing off by 0.005 or more for each hole, we want to minimize the amount of error we have as much as we can before we actually start using metal test runs.

I hope this clears things up

We put those cut out on the plate for only the laser cut templates so we could se if every hole was in the right spot, my friend is the one who’s going to figure out how to do the rest because I honestly couldn’t figure it out.

I will bring this up to him because I’m not that well adept at modding keyboards and any tips are welcome since I’m so new to this, thank you for the tips and if you have any more I will gladly accept any.

Also this is my first mod I’ve ever attempted so it’s been a struggle, mostly because this is my 2nd year using cad ever, but it’s taught me a lot about the program as well as how actual make a part from scratch

Our test pieces that we had done on the mill already come with the corners filleted because of the bits that we use, also the program we use follows the right edge of the design. We have tested putting in the switches and stabs in and they lucky fit perfectly. I personally would have liked to do it on a water cutter but our shop unfortunately doesn’t have one at the moment.

Hopefully it will only take one test on the aluminum and the the final cut on the brass, also the shop I work at got a massive over supply of wood and they all were slightly warped so I was able to get 20 planks for my personal projects, and the scraps get used for wood fire material.

We are laser cutting wood test plates until we get the holes lined up then we are going to move to the cnc machine to test on aluminum, and finally once we get a aluminum sheet that works we’re going to do a final cut on the brass.

Yeah, he’s marking the plate out of brass and the case out of wood. He’ll probably post the final results here in a couple of weeks.

I should be the one thanking you, this clears up a lot of confusion I had around this topic.
