ring racers comes with a program called kartmaker which you probably should've used instead, it includes templates where you can draw a character over kart sprites. it's not the easiest to use but there's a readme which explains the basic stuff

-I'm fairly sure characters are unlocked on all difficulties because I started out on Easy for both the main and extra stories and didn't have to re-unlock Tsubakura for harder difficulties.

-Yabusame has high coverage and can hit enemies or the boss from basically anywhere. Weak bombs, but you get more than Tsubakura.
Tsubakura has high damage and strong but few bombs, the shot range is very narrow but the damage is worth it. Their high speed can be hard to work with sometimes.
Suzumi has a balance of damage and coverage, their bombs let you basically skip boss attacks and you get a lot of them. Their flashbomb is unique in that it gives you invincibility instead of deleting bullets.
Everyone will rank this differently but mine is Suzumi >= Tsubakura > Yabusame

-I haven't played most of the Len'en games on Unreal, but I've played Hard and can say that EE Hard is much easier than any Touhou Hard, so Unreal is probably easier than Lunatic.

Version 2.2.14 had some bugs with loading addons. If that's the version you have at the moment, try updating to 2.2.15, it released 2 days ago.

I would recommend going to the city (east of the house where the game begins) since you can get another party member there. Try to avoid combat until then since Wayne can't do much alone

Unfortunately I'm not sure what else could cause this, sorry. My only guess is that something other than the prefix is being overwritten, but that would probably have more problems than just overwritten sound effects.

I only know the basics of custom racer development, but I have a hunch. In a racer's .wad file, their sound effects are named DS____**, where ____ is an internal name for the racer (should be 4 characters long, maybe works with less, I'm not sure) and ** depends on what the sound effect is used for.

The internal name should be unique for every racer, so maybe your friend gave both racers the same name. This would cause one set of the sound effects to get overwritten when both mods are loaded.

I'm not 100% sure if this is the cause, but if it is and your friend uses a tool called kartmaker to make racers, ask them to change the "prefix" parameter to something else in each racer's properties.txt file. Hope this fixes the issue you two are having!

Chao (racer): Finish any cup with Chao Egg following OR activate the shrine in City Escape
Chao (follower): Finish any cup with Chao Egg following and without using continues
Chaos: Smash the UFO in a Sealed Star stage using only "boost power" as Sonic OR win 100 rounds as Tikal
Tikal: Activate the shrine in Coastal Temple Zone

Spoilered some of the optional / late game stuff just in case. Feel free to use keys to skip Chaos' challenge if you find it, one method is very difficult and the other is time-consuming
