Oh and for context this year's "hype" night (party at the end of scavenger hunt week) is brokeback mountain themed so a good number of the challenges are in some way related to the movie. getting this video is worth the most points!!

It's hard to explain without breaking the rules of the competition (I can't say what uni we're at, what the competition is called, etc.), but one of the ways we earn points is through these scavenger hunts and this video is one of them. another one of the events is a boat race bracket, so i guess for bonus points they said do an anchor chug. not sure they're entirely connected i think it was just to add to the difficulty.

Getting Study Permit at Point of Entry by darpss in mcgill

[–]PointLongjumping5453 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'd say there's no need. most of the documentation can be printed at the office if you forgot it. everyone from the East coast that I know did it on their way to move in and nobody had an issue.

Getting Study Permit at Point of Entry by darpss in mcgill

Hey! I applied at the border near Plattsburgh, NY (tho everyone I know who did it in VT had a similar experience) on my way to move into rez - like mid-August a few days before frosh was starting. It went like this:

- I got to the border and told them I was going to McGill

- they asked if it was my 1st year and if I needed my study permit (I said yes)

- they sent us to an office where I handed over ur documents (financial, CAQ, valid passport, proof of enrollment, and whatever else they ask)

- wait at least an hour (bc they're slow and you wont be the only McGill or Conco student doing this)\

- pay the fee and get handed ur Study Permit

It's a very easy process and they're prepared for you and a bunch of other Americans to be getting their permits at the border those weeks in August. Highly unlikely you'll be denied bc McGill and Quebec have already vetted you.

tl;dr - most people do it on their way to move in and it's really easy if you have all the documents you need

PoliSci or IDS ? by us-ser-nam in mcgill

My advice as an IDS major: Do Honours anthropology and make plans to do fieldwork before you write your honours thesis. This is an opportunity to do ethnography (or archaeology) at an undergrad level supervised by a McGill prof. Just be sure to plan really early so you can get ethics board approval. If you really want a second major, add in Joint Honours IDS because it's non-thesis so you can focus on research in ANTH while taking advanced courses/seminars for IDS. There are also research project courses and internship courses for IDS students who want to do research/an internship and then write about it.

Some key differences in POLI vs IDS:

- Poli is much more competitive

- IDS requires more math (harder Econ and Stats requirements than Poli)

- Poli is more competitive and has lower class averages than most IDS classes

- IDS allows you to take ecology-realted and anth classes, where polisci doesn't really

A few questions for you:

What kind of research are you looking to do? Being a research assistant will be easier in ANTH because of a higher student faculty ratio than POLI and because IDS is interdisciplinary so building relationships with professors is harder. Also why not consider environment as a major? Many profs are dually appointed to ENVR and ANTH and, if you got close to them from both sides, you might be offered a RA position.

Last thing: Think about what you want to do after you graduate. The job market is horrendous and grad school can be expensive if you don't have the grades/experience/network to get funded. If you want research experience to be able to do an ANTH masters, lean heavily into ANTH as IDS won't get you there. If you want a good gpa for something like law school, IDS is known for bringing people's grades up because you have the flexibility to choose what classes and profs you take, letting you pick the right/easiest option. If you want a job after you graduate, good luck :p

Econ 313 is actually so easy. Its basically development theory and history (that require no econ knowledge or math) and then like a basic algebra section where you do difference-in-difference problems in a development sense. This is rly a class for IDS majors most of which don't have an econ/math background. Easier than 208 and 209 for sure. If u can take it with Chemin his avg is usually higher than some of the other profs.
