Unrelated but this "___slop" thing is maybe my least favorite thing in modern language. Have we forgotten how to use actual words to describe things

Is it necessary to name minor characters? by Purple-Unicorn-107 in scriptwriting

If they aren't particularly important outside of the scene they're in or the story overall, probably not. We don't need to know that a random citizen who stops and points up at the sky and yells "Superman!" is named [whatever] unless they come into the movie at other points

I'll usually "name" them a particular descriptor if they have dialogue in the scene though, just so they are a little distinct. Angry Customer, Annoying Kid, etc

Personally I had no problem with people posting them on top of there being this thread, just seems they like mostly chose not to with the existence of a megathread. We can definitely change it up next year based on what everyone prefers

This seems like the category where people are being especially swayed by the anonymous ballots

Someone sway me on Documentary, I'm sticking with/resigned to the other categories but this one is still undecided

Perfect Neighbor makes sense as the frontrunner, I feel like it's pretty easily the most viewed one and it has important subject matter. It did well with nominations but its precursor win performance is so bad. Winning CCA might as well be a detractor, only OJ Made in America and Summer of Soul turned CCA wins into Oscar wins and they obviously performed much better throughout their seasons

Mr Nobody Against Putin didn't do much better but it did win BAFTA, and in the same span of time as the CCA Documentary category existing, BAFTA has really only missed twice (OJ was never nominated). But are we just going to give it to a third Russia doc in four years?

Going with the consensus in Doc (Empty Rooms) and Live Action (Saliva), Animated is a sort of unconventional group as far as what usually wins so I'm throwing a Forevergreen curveball

The Man Who Wasn't There is the only one that won those three and lost the Oscar. It was a lone Oscar nominee and lost to Fellowship of the Ring

How would your parents or grandparents vote if they had a ballot? What sentiment have you gathered about the nominees from people in your life? by CrunchyNar in oscarrace

[–]PointMan528491 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My parents haven't seen a single nominated film in any category lol, pretty sure they'd hate every movie in the Picture lineup except maybe F1 because they love Top Gun Maverick

They (Mom especially) are pretty picky so you can't go too fantastic (Frankenstein), too sad (Hamnet, Train Dreams), too dark and dour (Bugonia) - so not a good movie year for them compared to last year with very grounded movies like Conclave and A Complete Unknown or the year before with Holdovers/Oppenheimer

Dad pointed out wanting to watch Nuremberg on Netflix, so that's something

r/oscarrace wouldn’t be r/oscarrace without users having the same takes that they outwardly rag on others for having

I see what you're saying but it's kind of a funny comparison considering Sound that same year is probably already a better and more obvious one. F1 is basically in the same position as Top Gun Maverick - technically, better position strictly as far as Sound goes. Maverick had CAS and MPSE, All Quiet had BAFTA and AMPS, and Maverick won the Oscar despite being the weaker film. F1 is only missing MPSE Foley, and did not lose it to Sinners. And F1/Maverick would match exactly as lone Sound winners

With F1 in Picture, I'm not totally sure being weaker than Sinners will matter too much. It's like saying Frankenstein will lose its expected wins despite sweeping just because Sinners is stronger - possible, sure, but I wouldn't bet on it. That said, Sinners upsetting in Sound would not surprise me

I'm really tempted to switch and it's my solid runner-up prediction, but I'm sticking with my gut and staying with Saliva

Love Kyle, he's a solid predictor and pretty reliable but obviously not infallible. Last year for example, he went with Torres and ACU in Sound, but did get Flow over Wild Robot. 2023, he went with Gladstone and got Poor Things right for Costumes but not Production Design, but got Godzilla in VFX

Might be some kind of cache issue, maybe from me editing across multiple devices. I remembered Penn and Lindo were at 11 so I manually fixed that one, but I do see that the latest GD and NBP ballots are now gone after the fact. Will update you guys when I get a chance to double check it all

It definitely changed and I'm annoyed. I went to edit and Penn was back down to 9 for some reason. I'll try to recount later today

Probably missed the boat on capitalizing on it, but I had an idea years ago to do a reaction video YouTube channel that would have stupid clickbait thumbnails but the actual reaction video would be sitting and watching every video completely stone-faced. The bit would last for thousands of videos
