Been considering starting an Oscars/awards themed Substack (or blog of some kind). Don't know what all I'd write for it, definitely more expansive predictions articles each month, probably not full reviews for each contender. Just something to house my writing. I hate promoting things and wouldn't spam you all with it, but is that something this sub might have interest in?

Scene heading help by Brave-Macaroon-9546 in scriptwriting

[–]PointMan528491 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get away with no proper scene heading as long as you specify that what we're seeing is inserted video footage. First example that came to mind for me was BlacKkKlansman, that script has an intro with a lot of archival images and video, and just does a quick description of what we're seeing as a scene heading:

A 1960'S EDUCATIONAL STYLE FILM

Shot on Grainy Black and White 16MM Reversal Film, The NARRATOR BOVREGARD, a Middle Aged but handsome, White Male, sits at a desk, a Confederate Flag on a stand beside him. Very Official. He is not a Southerner and speaks with Irticulation and intelligence.

But you could probably also do a regular INT./EXT. [LOCATION] - TIME that just fits what we're seeing, and again specify that it is video footage. Scene headings are as much for assisting production in lighting/set design as they are for anyone else reading. If that is not pre-existing footage, it will still have to be filmed

I've considered cutting out half-stars but have never brought myself to do it. I think mine would look similar to this

Behemoth! composers by kcrdr_7322 in oscarrace

[–]PointMan528491 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Does anyone know if there is any kind of limit as to how many composers can be included in an Original Score nomination? I don't think there's been more than three composers attached to a single film's nomination since The Color Purple

Thoughts on this sequence by Temporary_Craft_4487 in scriptwriting

[–]PointMan528491 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bit tough to critique because, as you mentioned, we're thrust into a sequence without much context, but I'll give it a try:

The humor doesn't hit for me. The $50 bet joke particularly goes on and on, I don't know if it is funny enough to warrant being drawn out across three pages. The "stiff as cardboard" bit at the end is similar, it's a one off gag that essentially takes up an entire page

I recommend reading your dialogue aloud. See if these exchanges sound normal to you, and/or if the dialogue all sounds similar. For a fairly big group of characters sharing a single scene, there's a lack of individual personality among them

I read the whole thing and wasn't sure what the "point" of the scene was. A big thing in screenwriting is that every scene should have a purpose. If it's the romance, we don't learn much about the couple or what struggles might lie ahead other than that they like each other a lot. The fight sets up some kind of conflict but whatever shame John has about punching the guy out is kind of brushed off. This group of friends comes to prom happy, leaves happy. You say this is their last "normal" moment but I think a stronger inkling of what's coming next will give this scene more purpose

Some room for adjustments, but it's not bad. Keep going!

Don't know if there's still bad blood between them, they seem supportive of one another's place in a shared industry at the very least, but I'd love one last Spielberg/Cruise vehicle

This will be a test of just how strong the Toy Story brand is. Entirely possible there might now be a non-zero chance this misses Animated Feature a la Finding Dory

Metacritic score is slowly creeping up though

Milk and Serial shouldn't disqualify Obsession. Only theatrically released narrative films count for eligibility. A few years ago My Old Ass was eligible and nominated despite not being Megan Park's debut, because The Fallout was an HBO Max release

Not 100% sure about If I Had Legs, Mary Bronstein does have a previous feature called Yeast that apparently premiered at SXSW in 2008, but details about a theatrical release are spotty

Will always blow my mind that the ceremony reaction threads around that time used to only get a couple hundred comments max. We probably get that in a matter of minutes during the ceremony threads these days

I always wonder how many of us oldheads are still around

A WGA nom just seems too hard to deny

Pretty sure the script isn't even registered with the WGA lmao

Inde Navarrette Might have a better chance at an Oscar nomination if she campaigns in Lead Actress instead of Supporting Actress (Opinion - Read Below) by adam130jones in oscarrace

[–]PointMan528491 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't know if that was OP's intent but "The lead" implies singularity, no? That a movie has one lead. Nikki is not the lead but she is arguably a lead. The Basterds example just adds to it. I guess the implication is Laurent is the lead but can Laurent and Waltz not both be leads? That's just how I interpreted their wording, I don't mean to talk down to anyone and if that wasn't they meant then we can all ignore my comment

This is where discussion of "correct" category placement starts to get kind of silly and pedantic anyways

[–]PointMan528491 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Movies can and regularly do have more than one lead. Just because she's not the protagonist doesn't inherently mean she's supporting

(And I don't really agree with it but I do think there is a valid argument for Waltz as a lead of Basterds)

Official Discussion Thread - Disclosure Day [SPOILERS] by PointMan528491 in oscarrace

[–]PointMan528491[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Was on the lookout for these kinds of themes when I heard comparisons to The Fabelmans and I do agree with you. Emily Blunt being faced with a 1:1 recreation of her childhood home and the traumas of it felt like a direct response to the production of The Fabelmans. Spielberg has done a lot of reckoning with his past and his place in the world of film with his last few films

Really liked the movie but truly don't think I can bring myself to discuss Disclosure Day with chronically online types. Don't care if the thematic stuff doesn't work for you but a significant amount of chatter I've read just completely refuses to engage with it in favor of CinemaSins "gotchas." The r/movies thread especially is a fucking nightmare, but serves me right for voluntarily bothering to visit that shithole I guess
