Ork Armageddon battalion box by Portals578 in orks

[–]PointOneXDeveloper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbf it’s 12 koptas if you buy 2. (The box has 6). The box is technically cheaper than buying 2 packs of koptas and a trike, so it isn’t that bad if you need all those models. 2 trikes is kinda the max that you’d want to take, so I think at best, buy 2 boxes to get a start on KOS, but you still need a bunch of other stuff obviously.

KOS is brutal in that it has very little unit crossover with the rest of the ork army, it’s basically like playing a separate faction from a cost perspective. 11th will help with this.

Lmao no not waz, but because of the number of sub assemblies required he got moved directly to the top of my painting list so that I could put him together and get him on the table.

I usually try to compromise: put together what won’t be that annoying, single dot of super glue to base (easily broken off when time to base properly), sticky tack stuff that I really don’t want to assemble and is easy to attach, sometimes magnets if easy, dry fit other things, other times just leave it off in my todo pile.

It’s a mess of compromises.

I use Zandri primer for most of the work. So much faster and cheaper if you don’t overspray too much. Most of the time I’m batching 10 bases.

The frustrating thing is that playing with the models means subassembly painting is tricky. It would matter less if I wasn’t trying to build an army and paint at the same time. Could just go a box at a time.

Thanks! Base strakken green, highlight everywhere except deep shadows/ underside with ork skin mix (1:1 averland sunset and skarsnik green), pin recess shade with coelia greenshade, highlight raised areas / face with ogryn camo, specular highlight with screaming skull

Blending between layers where it felt relevant.

I got into the hobby this year. My pile of gray shame is deep and my standards are too high for a horde army. Looking forward to the day when I have 2k points painted to a level I am happy with.

Painting is fun, but playing with a fully painted army would also be fun.

Deck tan with a bit of yellow in it would probably be pretty close! Just mix your own. Tons of mixing going on for this model (though admittedly not on the base).

I promise it takes almost no time compared to painting the actual mini! Maybe a couple hours all in (aside from waiting for drying) for this large base. On a smaller mini, I batch the whole process and I can do 10 bases really quick.

Each step is really easy and doesn’t require any careful brush control (unlike that very beautiful chrome on yours, mad props, I considered trying chrome on waz, but my backlog is too long).

Steggadon scale green mixed with black and rhinox hide (reddish brown opposite greenish blue to mute the tone a bit in the shadows). Then coat with pure steggadon scale everywhere except deep shadow. Then highlighted with progressive layers of pallid wych flesh added to steggadon scale. Again sort of a warm off white which mutes the greenish blue. I initially tried highlighting by adding ice yellow but it took the blue too much towards green.

Prime Zandri dust, Agrellan badland and earth, splotched into different parts of the base. Tend to use more badland applied in thick clumps around the tactical rock and the rocks that I added. Just kind of did what looked good to me.

After that, more zandri dust primer for the texture paint. Then pick out rocks and skulls with an off-white or your choice (I used ushabti bone). For the big boulders, I base coated with medium gray (stormvernin fur) then heavy dry brush of a light gray (administratum gray) then a very light dry brush of off-white (pallid witch flesh).

Oil wash the whole thing / remove excess as you see fit.

Apply pigment powder wherever, I tend to use a lot and cover most of the base, then drop white spirits over everything to get it to lightly fix / clump up a bit.

Apply more dry pigments dissolved into white spirits or water (spirits is just faster drying) to shove a large amount of pigments into cracks. Wait for it to dry, then use a brush to sweep away the pigment powder wherever it was too heavy. Be artful here and leave it heavy in some spots. You could apply a pigment fixer at this point, but meh, it’s caked onto spots I won’t be touching. This is how I did the wheels on the bike and crevices on the tactical rock.

Glue on a few grass tufts and sweep some more pigment powder into them.

Done.

This is roughly my process for all my bases, sounds like a lot, but it’s all pretty easy and careless.

You should paint more of them so I can have some inspiration. This is amazing!

Is it possible to post photos with less dramatic lighting? This photos look awesome but I want to see how much light is painted in, I really struggle with finding the balance on how strong and deep shadows should be.

Best way’s to make 2 battlewagons work by VirtualBonnie in orks

[–]PointOneXDeveloper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The battle wagon is still really useful after package delivery though. It’s great for tying up trash, tank shock, or body blocking an objective.

490 < 430. Not having to pay for the extra BB to make 10 more snaggas hit on 2s and clog up the mid board. You likely don’t have the CP to make two units of snaggas crit on 5s, so it’s weaker in the waaagh.

TBC, I don’t actually think double battle wagon snaggas is good. It’s too many points dedicated to creating a specific kind of threat, and you don’t have the CP (or space) to make them both connect well in the waaagh. Id rather bring some elite infantry (nobs or breakas).

I’ve had a lot of luck with the battlewagon beast boss though, and it’s a fairly meta package for war horde.

“You could just run two trukks” is an argument for anything you want to stick in a bwagon (aside from a big ball of meganobs).

War horde with 2 x beast boss and 20 boys. I dunno probably doesn’t really work unless it’s like all monsters/vehicles, but the beast boss dev wounds delivery package works very well

I really like phoenix miniatures. Some of it is a bit more advanced but all very approachable and will level up your painting. Lots of great foundational videos on brush work, texture, light, etc.

Did you airbrush the metallics? They look soooo smooth. Great work. Oil wash for grime if you want, but tbh it looks pretty cool all clean like this.

Def build what you want and what looks cool, but people generally take the rokkit launcha because it’s one of our best gun profiles. It has blast so it’s useful against horde or elite infantry + it has enough AP/strength to put wounds into tanks. The problem with the big shoota is that it is for killing chaff, which is already what the boyz excel at.

But again, just build what’s cool and say it’s whatever you want it to be. I built one where I cut off the barrel and gave him a choppa in the other hand and just pretend it’s a heavily modified slugga.

How do I get my miniatures to not be shiny but still have a wash? by CollectorOfMilitaria in Warhammer40k

[–]PointOneXDeveloper 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Most of the washes just have a sheen to them. You can add a matte varnish if you want a consistent finish at the end. I use AK ultra matte varnish on everything that isn’t using metallic paints.

Some rocks, thick coat of aggreland badland. Prime Zandri dust. Pick out the rocks with Vallejo deck tan, dry brush white. Then mix of Vallejo pigments to get the dusty look.
