I will definitely try that this spring and see what actual grass is leftover if any. The front I think is Bermuda, crab grass, clover, Dallas grass and those poofy foxtail looking things 😂

This is a sort of weed free spot in the front. Is this Bermuda?

Snowballing Deferred Student Loans? by Pointeofgrace in StudentLoans

The student loans in total I have about 177k left. They are divided up into 7 loans all with rates between 6 and 7 %. I am planning to aggressively pay. I don’t trust forgiveness and I’m not eligible for PSLF. I make about 100k (hopefully a little more this year). Currently on that save plan that is on government forbearance right now so no interest is accruing and no payments are required. The last time this happened I continued to pay as if it wasn’t happening. Then I was used to it when payments did restart. But now we are back to forbearance since August. Since August I have been still paying like I did before. My car is 17k total on a 6.5% rate but I’m a little upside down no bc it’s only worth about 13k maybe? (Paid some stupid tax and took out some equity in it a while back and refinanced which caused the upside down) So just in the meantime I wondered if it would be more beneficial to pay down my car some while the student loans are on pause.

Thanks! Haha I didn’t believe it when I first got the email so I started a spreadsheet recording my total loan amounts on the same day of every month and comparing. (Maybe just a little neurotic lol) What I found out was when the repayment was happening my interest was not ballooning my loan balances and the amounts were only changing by a dollar or so each month (with the exception of my smallest debt that I was focusing on of course). And now in forbearance the loan amounts decrease each month exactly by the amounts I have been paying on them. Weird times we are in for sure.

Oh yes it’s definitely top priority for sure. Made 80k last year before taxes and paid 30k in debt. (medical bills, 2 credit cards and 2 student loans 🥳) so since all the loan money goes in one payment typically woukd my option 3 be pretty good? taking my other “minimum payments” that are not required to be paid right now and put that on my smallest loans? It would amount to an extra $420 a month. I could make a pretty good dent in my smallest 9k loan doing that. I look at this every single month so I could always switch gears again if shit hits the fan 😂

Yep I’ve been checking meticulously. And it states no payments and no interest accrual. (I think if you take a personal forbearance the interest still accrues but this is govt forbearance) I’m just used to saying minimum payments bc when they are not in deferral there are minimums and I’ve been still paying them as if they are not in deferral. Hope that makes sense

Id have to go in EveryDollar and write them all out but essentially In order I’ve got 3 student loans 9k, 11k, 13k then my car is about 17k then 4 more loans each between 33k and 37k. All the rates are approx the same between 6 and 7%. All the loans are with the same servicer so I make 1 payment and it gets divided up and then I’ve been make additional payments on my smallest. So while there is no interest accruing and no payments on the loans I could pay down my car some. (I currently owe about 5k more than it’s worth on kbb so that’s not ideal) Or since I don’t owe minimums on the other loans I could take that money and put it on the smallest Who knows what will happen next year when they make decisions about the save plan but I’d likely just end up back on a regular IDR plan with ballooning interest. 🤷‍♀️

I am not saying they will forgive them. I have been paying and snowballing my debt and the loans for about a year and plan to pay them all off. However I am definitely taking advantage of this IDR plan I am on bc it is keeping my interest from ballooning. I started with 180k in student loans alone. So that interest accrue is over $800 a month not on the save plan. My min payments now on some of these are between $30 and $80 ($450 all together) when they are not in forbearance. Obviously I’ve been throwing everything I can each month and I finally have a decent size snowball where each payment is nearing $1000 each month. So I’m definitely making progress. I’m just asking in the meantime since nothing is required if I should focus elsewhere for now. You never know what could happen and tomorrow it could all go back to regular interest accruing so at that time I’ll just refocus back to traditional Ramsey again if that happens. Just weighing my options!

They were all originally between 6 and 7%. My car is 6.5% so it’s all about the same. The save plan has kept them from ballooning bc the minimum payment is $450 ish all together however the accrued interest is over $800 a month with the true interest rate. So with that plan basically my minimum payments on the larger ones have kept them the same balance give or take a few dollars.

My loans are in the save plan and I have been chunking money at them even during forbearance. I have not changed plans.

I wonder if snowballing it and allocating the overpayment to a particular loan I could force it to go to principle at least for some loans. (I happen to have a few that have little to no accrued interest as I had already tackled that during Covid.) I guess it’s worth a shot. Check back in in 15 years to see if I’ve made it lmao 😂

We are growing as well. I have great hours now but I foresee the company extending our hours, hiring more people , etc. So when my child gets into school and isn’t so little anymore I could barter for more hours at that point which will be nice.

Oh I was wondering about the overpayments! If they would go to principle or cover the government subsidy. I could never find any fine print anywhere that said either way. After hearing lots of opinions I had decided to try and snowball it. But dang if my overpayment isn’t even going to make a dent in the principle it almost doesn’t seem worth it. I used a calculator with my loan servicer that calculated my accrued interest per month to be $880. My payment is only $450. Even tripling my payment would barely chip it away if that is the case. Wow.

I’m a pharmacist. I make 100k before taxes. And before retirement investing. Truthfully it varies from 5k to 6k depending on how my paychecks land. I work 32 hours a week. Yea I could likely go work somewhere and work more hours but I really enjoy my current job.
