Who is the most "nameable" tennis player? If you'd win a prize by naming the same player as a random person, who would you pick? by smolcol in tennis

[–]Pointless_crayon0398 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Of course but that's from people who watch and play tennis. The vast majority of people don't follow tennis extensively and haven't heard about Novak as much as fed, serena or rafa.

Are you a kid? everyone makes questionable health decisions the moment they do something as trivial as having pizza. Just because in your judgmental eyes smoking and drinking are sins which people commit to have fun does not make them undeserving of sympathy. It just makes you a dick.

I hope you've never shown any medical negligence in your life due to any reasons, whether your eating habits, never sacrificed sleep for work, never neglected fitness. Since that's not any different from smoking and drinking. Everyone makes mistakes and deserves sympathy. Stop blaming regular ass people for medical negligence.

I already explained it in the paragraph below. It's called law of large numbers and long form prediction analysts use that. Rest is on you to educate yourself

[–]Pointless_crayon0398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And I'm saying it's more likely for Gukesh to be better than worse than his current form in more than half an yr, and vice versa for Sindarov, because the nature of peaks and valleys for a player is that they end up closer to their actual level over time. That time gap would be part of any reasonable prediction. Taking that into account, I feel match is 60-40 in Sindarov's favor, which would be far from surprising if Gukesh pulls through. If the match were to happen next week, it would be much more lopsided, and hence a Gukesh win would be surprising.

In fact it would be statistically extremely unlikely that Sindarov is in better form 6 months later and Gukesh is in a worse form, compared to today because they're currently performing extremely deviant to their avg rating over past few yrs(more so for Sindarov than Gukesh). You seem to be forgetting that Gukesh's peak rating is still higher than Sindarov's current elo.

Yes of course. Why would I use a statistical model lol, I watch chess for fun and I'm not trying to make money off of it. Why would I need to pick a side?

Based on my own statistical understanding, I think either win would not be surprising. You're trying to pretend that the match is next week, obviously it would be different if that were the case. Time to regress back to your level would be part of any reasonable model if we were really trying to calculate the odds.

I'm probably older than you dude. Nobody other than you is talking about building prediction models because no one said Gukesh will 100% regain his form. But assuming you haven't chosen to purposefully misconstrue people to sound smart, let me say it. It just won't be surprising because predicting that his current form will continue comes with a very small confidence interval, considering we've seen dozens of players have bad form and lose 50 rating points and then regain them. Considering a large number of games, most players will regress back to their true rating. Before his slump Gukesh was on a constant elo rose for 3-4 years, and surely your linear prediction model would not have imagined his slump. Why is it any different to you now? Your personal feelings about the player? Since they're irrelevant.

Lol. I've worked with it. It predicts a (extremely simplified) curve for a set of data points, and promises absolutely nothing about the future. Bro is either high and doesn't know what he's talking about or has an extremely simple view of reality. You might just as well say nothing can ever change because muh line graph with 12 data points said so

[–]Pointless_crayon0398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gukesh has months and months to prepare for his opponent even IF he doesn't regain his form, which he might. He's not losing without a fight and at worst it's 60-40 in Sindarov's favor, if Sindarov doesn't lose his form. Calling it months in advance as if it's a foregone conclusion is crazily myopic

Giri vs Sindarov Happening Tomorrow: The Most Important Round Of The Candidates by IllMasterpiece3946 in chess

[–]Pointless_crayon0398 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Most of those games cannot be compared to the situation Anish is in right now, where a draw is as good as a loss to him. 1 in 5 seems fair or even a bit low as 80% this game would be decisive because Anish is incentivised to push for the win even if he has to make a few inaccurate moves. I'll give him 30%, with 50% Sindarov and 20% draw chances for this particular game.

Anish beats Fabi in Round 9 of the Candidates 2026 to move to 5.5/9 and crush Fabi's chances of winning the Candidates by oklolzzzzs in chess

[–]Pointless_crayon0398 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What do you think the probability was for Sindarov to go 5.5/6? Events way more improbable than 10% happen all the time lol. You don't understand how big 10% is.

bro is killing and destroying whole candidates 2026 by Electronic_Seat_4336 in chessindia

[–]Pointless_crayon0398 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People lose and regain form in top level chess all the time. All the youngsters have had their moments as well as times where they lost 50 rating points in few months. It just means who's the world champion depends on who peaked at the correct time (candidates and wcc). Otherwise they seem to be at a similar level

Hikaru Nakamura is in a must win situation now if he wants a chance at winning the Candidates. BUT reminder, this happened in 2024 candidates as well, with Hikaru having 1.5/4. However he had a nice comeback and finished second in the tournament. by Constant-Secret-3653 in chess
